The official dates are August 5, 1964 to May 7, 1975. However, the unoffical start date was February 28, 1961.

These are the dates used by the VA when deciding whether the vet was in during a war time

American involvement in the Vietnam Conflict officially dates from 1960 to 1975 when South Vietnam collapsed and the two Vietnams were re-united under the Democratic People's Republic of [North] Vietnam. In reality there were Americans in Vietnam prior to 1960 however those Advisors and C.I.A. operatives present was not recognized.

I think the problems started in 1959 with the French and ended in 1975 with the Americans.

Depends...The French were there first, then "military advisors" from the US, then things warmed up under Johnson...
