don't use newspaper in a building that people will occupy. It's a huge fire hazard. It will also absorb moisture easily, and start molding away. You'll have an even more serious problem then.

There's no substitute for an actual insulation designed to work in a home. Using anything else may cost you more money in the long run.

cardboard boxes, use ever how many layers you can, the more layers the better, or if you can find someone in the area that lays carpet, they would probably give you any old carpet or carpet padding they remove from a job, it would be better then them having to pay to haul it off. also if you can get any tarps or plastic to go over the card board. i insulated an out building, that is now my computer room with carpet padding, works great. hope this helps
