I am looking for freeware that has a spell checker that will allow me to save my file as a txt so that it can be universal between computers.

Open Office, the MS Office alternative. Their Open Writer is terrific and free to download.

Best thing I can suggest is to use notepad. It removes all formatting, but you want it like that so it can be saved as a .txt.
If not try the Open Office Suite. It saves files in a different format to MS WORD. The installation file is about 100MB.

Most Word Processors can save files as "txt" or "rtf" (the BETTER universal format), including M$ Word, and most have Spell Checking, too.

I heartily recommend Open Office, too, if you don't "own" M$-Office.

I agree with steve c - openoffice is free and super compatible - you should find a link if you search for one or you can find one at
