What is carpel tunnel syndrome and what causes it? I have never known anyone who has it so don't really understand what it is.

Carpet tunnel syndrome affects the fiber tissue, and nervers that lead to the use of your hands, and wrist.

The wrist is surrounded by a band of fibrous tissue which normally functions as a support for the joint. The tight space between this fibrous band and the wrist bone is called the carpal tunnel. The median nerve passes through the carpal tunnel to receive sensations from the thumb, index, and middle fingers of the hand. Any condition that causes swelling or a change in position of the tissue within the carpal tunnel can squeeze and irritate the median nerve. Irritation of the median nerve in this manner causes tingling and numbness of the thumb, index, and the middle fingers, a condition known as "carpal tunnel syndrome."

Usually, people with carpal tunnel syndrome first notice that their fingers "fall asleep" and become numb at night. They often wake up with numbness and tingling in their hands. The feeling of burning pain and numbness may generally run up the center of the person's forearm, sometimes as far as the shoulder. As carpal tunnel syndrome becomes more severe, symptoms are noticed during the day, and more often during any use of the affected and inflamed portion of the wrist and forearm.

There are many ways to treat this problem with surgery and physical therapy, as well as use of a wrist splint to immobilize the affected area. Some other treatment is with use of medication as well as the splint.

There are many different ways to find out the information about this and treatment of carpel tunnel syndrome.

Carpal tunnel syndrome produces pain in the hand and sometimes forearm on the affected side. It can also produce numbness of the thumb and first 3 fingers, as well as weakness of the thumb muscles. It is a result of compression of the median nerve as it passes from the forearm to the hand under a band of tissue that forms the roof of the 'carpal tunnel'. It is often associated with repetative strain injury (from typing and so on), but can result for any condition that makes the carpal tunnel too tight. Most of the time there is no obvious underlying cause.

Carpel Tunnel Syndrome may also be caused by emotional stress and surpressed rage. See the book: The Divided Mind.

The first person who answered this pretty much covered everything, except that it can be caused by simply doing the same motions with your hands for days on end, such as being a cashier in a grocery store and scanning items all day long. I have repetitive motion syndrome, which is a precursor to carpal tunnal and will eventually require surgery when I'm older.

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a medical condition in which the median nerve is compressed at the wrist, leading to pain, paresthesias, and muscle weakness in the forearm and hand. A form of compressive neuropathy, CTS is more common in women than it is in men, and, though it can occur at any age, has a peak incidence around age 42.The lifetime risk for CTS is around 10% of the adult population.

It's caused by the same hand and wrist motions, repeated daily over a certain length of time. Eventually, the hand and wrists locks and you have to wear a brace, sometimes surgery is needed for extreme cases. It's usually caused by typing, working on the computer and phone work.
