You didnt say what your work is, but in general, no- you dont have the right to be peeved. You put yourself in the position and you can change it. Age doesnt mean you get paid more. You want more money and better conditions you may need to take a risk and change jobs or go back to school on the side.

Pissed off at yourself. Have you looked for a better-paying job? Have you asked about benefits? Have you done anything to improve your situation or looked for a benefits package you can afford? Some states, I understand, have an insurance pool for low-paid workers.

If you are looking to be pissed off at your employer, no you have no right to be pissed off.
If you are looking at yourself, you should be incredibly pissed off. What have you done to improve the situation? Are you taking any classes? Have you expressed enthusiasm and interest in going further? If so, why have you not followed up?
