It helps pay for some of the upfront costs if the gym is first opening and also it prevents people from just joining a gym for a month or two and quiting right away without any significant income going to the gym.

Some gyms are very cheap. It depends on what you are looking for. Local hotels, universities and leisures centres often have good deals. There are plenty of no frills backstreet gyms as well if you ask around. If you try hard enough you will find somewhere to train for next to nothing in most towns and cities.

Ask your local big hotels whether their facilities are open for public membership, they often are at good rates.

The flashy gyms do a lot of advertising. The advertising doesn't come cheap and has to be paid for by you.

If you can get together as a group of people, you can often cut a deal with the gym owner as well.

depends on which one you go to and your perspective. My local authority gym is £30 a month for gym, swim and health suite. Since I go 25 times a month for about 90 minutes, that is about £1 an hour! You can't get much for that these days!

It's a rip off. Use your local council gym's instead. They are well equipped and you can usually pay as you go.
