It has been a year since I finished my MA and during this year I have only been working on a part time basis. This is regarded as a gap in my career and many employers frown on such gaps greatly.

It is a cycle. I can't get a job because I have a gap in my record and the longer I remain without a proper job, the longer my gap is going to become.

Any ideas on how I can find a way out???

Hans its a shame there is no detail here, like did you pass??? and whoever advised you to take a year off , omgg
was a complete fool . YOU stated i can't get a job because a gap in my record [ if you had no gap, there would no problem !!!] and the longer i remain without a proper job , the longer my gap " and the harder it will be for you to get back into employment. Why did you take the ma in first place ???
because now you are not using it to its full potential, use
google,fish4, monster, and jobcentreplus.gov.uk
When you do start going to interviews you will have to explain yourself, that is your predicament, i mean why go for all the training if you are not going to use it, quicker you get to work instead of doing a p/t work the better.

All excuses above are ok but thats lying, depends on how morale you are.
Anyway definately place your part time work on your C.V. I did an MA as well and I know how hard it is to find work...an MA does NOTHING to get you INTO the job market. Everythings experience in this, experience in that how can I get experience if Ive been studying for a year and only places in retail employ students?!

I digress...

Say something like 'Unfortunately I have not been able to find the right job until now and this is why I have remained in my part time work. I feel that, if given the opportunity, I will be able to start my career within this organisation...etc etc'. Makes them feel like youre picky but they are good enough for you to pick them. Something like that....I know how you feel!

As a recruiter I suggest you turn your so called gap into a positive. Out of school you're really trying to best position yourself, therefore you selected to take part time jobs to give you the time to really investigate your career opportunity, nothing wrong with that in consideration of the market and recession we seem to be entering. Something in that format. Good Luck

I have worked with a great team for going on five years now - it has brought me home full-time to be with my kids. I make 4 times what I used to make at my old office job working half the hours all at home. Visit www.GoodLifeToGreatLife.com for more info or call 877-216-1940

Think of a good reason as to why you had a gap year. Say you were doing some stem cell research in your uncles private lab or something.

i had the same problem. on your cv mention that you were working part time even if it doesn't relate to your field and if it was with an agency you can always include a contact name & no.

employers usually look down on this because they don't know whether you were in prison or anything like that.

The excuse that works for me is "i've been caring for a sick relative". It makes you seem compassionate, and it's not like they can check up on it.
