Most breeders dock the tails when the puppies are just a few days old to minimize the pain that it causes. If the breeder docked the tail at a young age it is hard to tell where to dock it. A rat terrier breeder that I know counts the tail bones and gets the tails the same length every time. If your dog was older when he had it done it is most likely that the vet who docked the tail was unsure how long it should be. I think a doberman's length tail should be fine unless you are planning to show the dog then I would check the breed standards on the AKC website. Good Luck!

When your dog grows, the shorter the tail will look. It is usually docked to fit the size the dog will be when fully grown.

they can be different lengths. Dobie size is good length. My rott's tail was very short and I always thought they cut it off too close to the body

tail docking is a difficult procedure if not done correctly. if a dogs tail is to be docked, ensure it is done by a professional who knows what they are doing, as if done wrong, it can cause severe pain to the dog.

If it's not going to be a pedi show dog-why does it matter?
It has no health benefit to the size, its not going to affect him...

The right size is whatever he was born with.

Tail docking is inhumane and completely unnecessary.
