I'm friends with the manager of a new Mexican restaurant in my town. They really needed a bar tender, because everyone that works there is a young kid that can't even touch the alcohol. Anyways they started me last night. I'm only 18, and though I'm serve safe certified I don't have a bar tending license. Is this legal or do I need to have a license and be 21?

Yes you can be a bartender. My daughter is 18, no bartender's license and she tended bar at a place on Hampton Beach this summer.
Where is the restaurant. NH needs good Mexican food restaurants in the worst way. Don't even mention Margarita's, that place is lame.
PS - I can teach you how to make a killer margarita. I had to learn because a good margarita is impossible to find in NH. I lived on the west coast most of my life, very disappointed by the quality of the Mexican cuisine in New England.

While you have to be 18 to serve, a lot of companies state that the bartender be 21. I'm not sure if that is law or company preference. Since you are sever safe certified you should be fine. A bertending license is not necessary or realistic. As for the owner, he probably needs to be ceritfied as well and look into RAS. Responsible Alcohol Service programl put out by the NRA (National Restaurant Association). I manage a bar in Memphis, TN and don't know your state laws but I do know most of the National level ones and there is a lot to abide by so your friends' place doesn't get shut down.

Being that each state have their own laws I would check with the courthouse and ask this question. Some states require you be 21 licensed and some not licensed. Also it would help if one is experience in the field of a bartender.

Most states in teh USA require that you be 21 to pour but only 18 to serve.
A bar tending liscense would be nice but MAY not be required, you would need to check with your local and state authorities (possibly state liquor liscensing board?) and see if they require a liscense to tend bar.
You could also ask a friend who is over 21 to ask a bar tender for you about it but if the state requires 21 to pour then you are stuck for a few years yet.
