Is it important to learn the grammar when learning a new language or should we just learn all the phrases and words ?

For example, Spanish, I understand= yo entiendo
so should we just memorize the phrase or learn step-by-step like entender means to understand, it is an irregular verb so we need to add an i between t and e. and change the last er to o for meaning "I" and know that yo is just for emphasizing !!!

English too, must people think pural in english in add s. but not all are like that. for words that end in x,ch,sh, will be es. and if it end in y, we have to cut y and add ies !!!!

Yes, you need to learn the grammar. Babies learn it intuitively, but adults will find that very difficult. In any case, whether you study it or manage to learn it intuitively, you have to know the grammar of any language to be able to speak it. No language can work without it.

Whenever you go to a school they tend to teach a lot of grammar to you, alot of textbooks are set out this way. I think the reason for this is that there are only so many ways you can make sentences, so if you start with teh wrong word changesa and wrong word order you may get very confused even if you know lots of words. New words are always more fun than grammar, but it is nice just to set out some different possibilities and make your own sentences to remember the grammar, that way the words you need should slot in.
English is one of the worst for not being simply grammar, so a lot of other work is needed to pull meaningful sentences together...

There is a third possibility, which I use. Get a general idea of the grammatical possibilities e.g., that spanish verbs sometimes change the root vowel from e to ie, that the plural involve adding -s or -es, or the like, but without memorizing all the details, and then read read read, and over time u will develop an instinct for the rules--like a baby does.

I think you have to do a combination. Learn some phrases "as is" but also (perhaps only later, and perhaps partly intuitively) learn how they work grammatically. I think it almost always takes too long to just "pick it up" when you're learning a second language after age seven or so. But you'll probably find that grammar lessons/exercises alone aren't enough to "get it".
