I am talking about the convenient shieldings at the top of the wheels that prevent mud and water from splashing up. My bike doesnt have this but could I go to any bike shop and buy it seperately?

Keep the dirty side down.

As the previous answerer said, yes, you can buy fenders at a bike shop. Some are detachable, others are permanent. Most of the ones I've seen are plastic.

I have something called a mud shield, which is a little curved plastic piece that I attached to my downtube with velcro straps, making it easy to put on and take off. It helps keep street grit out of my face and mouth. It's probably not as protective as a full fender, but it's enough for me, and it is small, light, and inexpensive.

yup,

absolutely every local bike shop should have them in stock...

you're looking for "fenders"

make sure they are compatible with the frame, and the size of the wheel printed on the side of it.

good luck

EDIT***

I forgot - want an awesome tip? Spray the underside of your fender with non-stick cooking spray like PAM, so it'll just shed the dirt!!!

Yes. Most places have them in stock. Even if you go to wal-mart they will usually have them.
