i was dropping my daughter off from school this morning and came to the stop sign and i was turning left and this other car was going straight. a car was in front of me that went straight and i pulled up next and there was a car at the other stop sign that went straight and i decided i would turn since that other car had just pulled up there and she only looked side to side before she decided to take off not seeing me trying to turn. she did a mississippi stop if thats how u say it because we are from mississippi. was i supposed to sit their and make sure no one is going to straight before i turn if their is a lot of cars behind me.

A complicated question for a very simple answer.

Before you turn left, you must insure the way is clear. If there is an accident it will be your fault since you were turning.

Looking side to side is acceptable, as long as no cars were coming, that person had the right of way over turning vehicles.

A very simple question to answer,
The other car going straight had the right of way IF the two of you arrived at the intersection at the same time since you were going to turn into their path..... NOW if you were at the stop first this is entirely different as YOU had the right of way, and the bubble head in the other car would have been ticketed for failure to yield. After re-reading the other driver is a moron and GOOD eyes MOM!! That is what makes the roads safe. People who pay attention!! I hate going to accidents where everyone THINKS they have the right of way. In this case if I came to the accident (had one happened) I would hear both sides and since my experience tells me that most of the time drivers do not look at turn signals, Too much trouble. Be careful out there Mom.... It's a crazy world...

Even though the other person "should" have waited, you would be responsible had there been an accident. Glad you were watching. Goes back to the old saying "Being right and being Dead right".

Bottom line............you only have the right of way if someone gives it to you....................you are responsible for your own safety.............good for you that you were watching the other drivers' eyes, and that you were being so observant! Once you have stopped, you should begin to "creep" out, while covering your brake, and yes, observe all those other drivers who may bully you into letting them go first...........be careful out there.......usually there is co-operation at stop signs, but there will always be those pushing their own agenda......

It should go in order of appearance at the intersection. The person to the right has the right of way. Not necesarily the person going straight.
