With modern antibiotics it is unlikely a normal person may die cz of it. At the most it is grossly suppurated, or may be gangrenous, but chances of this much severe infection are slim. Of course, we are not talking of diabetic or immuno-compromized patient.

Sepsis, which is a whole-body inflammation caused by an infection. Sepsis can be fatal.

I assume you have an infected ear piercing. You don't mention whether it is a lobe or a cartilage ear piercing. Regarding care of ear piercings, cartilage or otherwise:

1. Never, never use isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol or hydrogen peroxide on a piercing. These can damage the tissues.
2. Piercings should be flushed or soaked in a warm-water sea-salt solution twice a day.
3. An antimicrobial soap such as Provon (http://www.bodymattersgold.com/acatalog/Provon.jpg) should be applied to the piercing after the sea-salt treatment. Turn the piercing gently. Avoid antibacterial soaps that may contain fragrances, dyes, and alcohols; these can irritate the piercing.
4. Avoid jewelry that may contain nickel. Use stainless steel, titanium, or gold (if you aren't allergic) jewelry.
5. Do not touch the piercing without washing your hands thoroughly.
6. Do not use antibiotic ointment on a piercing. You do not want the piercing to "heal"; you want it to "toughen".

You may want to consult the piercer or piercing agency that you used for further advice.

If you are having significant redness, swelling, red streaks, pain, or fever, you may want to consult a physician.

Ok, I had the upper cartilidge of my ear pierced and it got really really infected. I didn't have to see a doctor or anything. I used hydrogen peroxide, alchohol, and bacitracin antibiotic oinment. This seemed to do the trick.
If you are planning on doing your own piercing you have sterilize the needle and take all the cautions...otherwise, you will get an infection.
I never heard of anyone dying from a piercing!!!
The area will be sore and you will never be able to have THAT area pierced again. You may also develop a lump that is always there.
Piercings today are done so often and if the person is doing it is well-qualified and takes all the steps to ensure that everything is satitized, there should be no problem.
It was my own fault that my piercing got infected. I took the earring out too soon and stuck a cheap one in.

GOOD LUCK

Well worst case scenario for anything IS death! But the odds of dying over an infected ear piercing when there's antibiotics available, are pretty slim.

The worst case scenario with any situation is death. Most likely you will have to take out the earring and take antibiotics if cleaning and antibiotic ointment doesn't clear it up.

Worse case with any untreated infection is death. Sounds dramatic, I know, but you asked :)
Second worst is your ear falls off.
Best you go see a doctor, don't you think?

If gangrene sets in and you don't notice, you lose the ear.

Gangreene and you need to have ear amputated.

Gangreene and you don't get it amputated and it kills you!

Hopefully you will seek medical treatment before it gets to that stage!
