Some dentists will use 'laughing gas', or Nitrous Oxide, in addition to a local anesthetic. It will relax you, making the experience a little more pleasant, and most people don't have any side-effects from it.
If you are going to have it, do not eat for four hours prior to the visit.....food in your stomach can make you feel nauseous.
By the time you're discharged from the office, the effects of the Nitrous Oxide will have worn off, and the only difference you'll feel is the numbing sensation from the
injection(s).
You'll be fine!

Laughing gas (nitrous oxide) is not commonly used in extracting teeth. It is cheaper to use other anaesthetics.

Tooth extraction can be performed with local anesthesia if the tooth is exposed and appears to be easily removable in one piece. An instrument called an elevator is used to loosen (luxate) the tooth, widen the space in the bone, and break the tiny elastic fibers that attach the tooth to the bone. Once the tooth is dislocated from the bone, it can be lifted and removed with forceps.
If the extraction is likely to be difficult, the dentist may refer the patient to an oral surgeon. Oral surgeons are specialists who are trained to give nitrous oxide, an intravenous sedative, or a general anesthetic to relieve pain. Extracting an impacted tooth or a tooth with curved roots typically requires cutting through gum tissue to expose the tooth. It may also require removing portions of bone to free the tooth. Some teeth must be cut and removed in sections. The extraction site may or may not require one or more stitches to close the cut (incision).
If the problem is that great, choose to go under general anaesthetic instead.

I get almost all my dental work done using Nitrous Oxide. If you are having a tooth pulled they will also give you novacaine so you don't feel the pain. Nitrous makes you not care about your tooth being pulled.
I would not suggest JUST using Nitrous and not numbing the area at all...It hurts like heck!
