Someone who decides to use temporary starvation as a method of weight loss will basically stop their metabolism all together for that short period of time... So when they reach their 'goal' and begin to eat again they will be eating as they did before but their body won't be able to handle breaking down the food at that same rate so weight gain is to be expected above and beyond what they lost by starving themselves...
An anorexic does not 'temporarily' not eat... They just don't eat and when they do their daily caloric intake is only a few hundred calories (no where near enough needed to survive)... Their body is using any and all body fat and will begin living off of any muscle mass until there is nothing left... They will also 'work off' any calories they take in so basically they are still starving themself... An anorexic's main intention is not losing weight... It is about pain, self-image, and control over something in a world they feel they have no control...
Long term an anorexic will die due to starvation... Short term starvation for 'weight loss' purposes causes the Yo-Yo diet affect and may possibly have health reprecussion but they will not be fatal (unless there is a health condition involved)...
Regardless of whether someone is starving themself for emotional/mental reasons or for a quick 'weight loss' reasoning... Starvation is NEVER healthy...

Anorexia Nervousa is a disorder of the mind first, then the body. It is a mental state of "I am to fat", yet they are typically underweight already. They will control what they eat, how much and then use exercise to strain their body.
Men and women are both affected by it.
Your body works like this-Fat cells are made to store nutriants to feed other parts of your body. IF you are depriving your body of nutriants your body will store as much as it can in fat...often causing a swelling of the cells (which can actually lead to water gain, and infections in the tissue such as celulitus).
If your starving yourself but still eating foods-it's going to start storing fats that are typically used in exercise or energy. You can't "loose" fat-it will always be there unless you have it surgically removed.
Bulemic suffers often do not loose more than approx 10 pounds per their binging and perging; because of the way the human body reacts to starvation.
Anorexics that are in desprate stages will have brittle bone disorders, brusings, their hair can fall out, their teeth often rott, they can develope rickets of the legs and arms, their gums could show signs of heart problems, the muscles will begin to atriphene and parts of their intestines and bowls can become inflamed and actually die off.
It's a painful thing to watch and often needs invasive treatments...

If you stop, or drastically reduce eating, although you will initially loose weight, your body interprets this as a famine period and metabolism slows down to conserve resources.
Even when you start eating agin it stays slow, as your body tries to prepare for future famine, so you gain weight on a diet which would once hve maintained a healthy weight.
This is what leads to yo-yo dieting.
If you reduce your food intake to nothing or extremely little, experience the initial weight loss, have your metabolism slow down and continue to starve your body, you will continue to loose weight (much more slowly) as your body starts absorbing your own flesh to use for fuel. When taken to extreme this is anorexia. Your body is literally starving and virtually eating itself trying to survive, you look like a rake, loose skin tone, hair and nail quality and eventyually damage your internal organs, sometimes irreparable!
If you wish to loose weight, and maintain the weight loss, with a healthy glowing skin, hair etc, then do it slowly by eating a well ballanced diet and getting fresh air and daily exercise.

Trust me, anorexia affects your body in the long term and you end up with high body fat. I suffered with anorexia in my teens (I'm 26 now) and even though I'm the exact same weight as I was before the eating disorder, I'm now 2 inches bigger everywhere! This is what happens, you lose muscle and gain fat in it's place and you end up fatter. Don't be a fool, it's not worth it. You will definitely regret it.

Hmmm you sound way to interested in anorexia to me for it to just be curiosity??
Your not wanting an ED are you??
Trust me you dont want one, its not the answer, looking at the calorie content of everything including water is not fun. My calorie intake is less than 150 a day sometimes nothing then you feel bad you have eaten it so do everything you can to work off those calories, yes you do lose weight but at a very high cost!!
All the answers above are true and correct ED's are not fun.

It has something to do with the bodies natural survival instincts - in times of famine in years past our bodies reacted by using our fat stores effectively to stop us starving to death. However, it is only temporary and eventually it stops -thus people even in this day and age still starve to death. Anorexia is a mental as well as physical illness so even if the body reacts to save the person, their mind fights them. Truly sad.

The convinction that was only my fault, if I was not thin as a model (and not a matter of constitution or genetic) brougth me to anorexia.
please think, before talking.
Thank you.
I've suffered from anorexia nervosa and now Its really difficult , for me, to loose weight.
First of all, because my body get used about living with few calories pour day, secondairly because this kind of desease is genetically related with Obesity tendencies...moreover I suffer from PCOS, that causes me insuline resistance...
So, when I suffered from anorexia I used to eat 1400 Kcal pour day and I kept on loosing weigt (till 38 kilos) because I was really frigtened by the idea of putting on weight (one of the symptoms of anorexia) end I kept on mooving in order to burn more kalories...
Now, 15 yers later, my weight is 63 kiloes for 169 cm and I still have to eat 1400 kcal pour day in order to prevent complication from PCOS and to loose weight...but I still do not have loosen a single gram...because my body has became resistant to insuline, so my methabolism is very low.
Moreover, this year I started working as an employer and I had very few time to go to my fitness center...
Please stop saying that fat people are so only because they eat very much...
In many cases this is true...but it's also true that many people are genetically predisposed to getting fat...this was because I was a little bit overweight when I was 14..

In the beginning you put on weight because your body is trying to conserve every bit of energy (fat) it can. Eventually you will reach the point where the body's fat stores are completely depleted and at that point the body starts to break down muscle for energy. It is the body's catabolism of itself (the breakdown of muscle) that contributes to the skinny anorexic look. Hope that helps.

This is how it works :
The problem with diet information, is that the words WEIGHT, SIZE, SHAPE and FAT are used interchangeably. (Not just in ordinary conversation, but in 'reputable' dietary advice as well.)
That leads to massive confusion, because they are all separate issues, and each responds differently to changes in your lifestyle.
Fat is being stored AND released from storage ALL OF THE TIME. The things you do affect how much storage is going on, and how much is being released. If you eat less than you need, (a little less or a lot less) your body will respond by storing more fat, and releasing less.
That won't normally make you GAIN weight, but it will make you FATTER. If you regularly starve yourself, then more of the fat that is available when you do eat, will be stored. That WILL make you gain weight.
At the same time, you will feel hungry (weak & lethargic). This will limit the amount of activity you can do. Muscle tissue will be removed (dismantled NOT burned for fuel) so that it is not using energy.
Muscle loss will make you LOSE weight, and because this reduces the proportion of 'lean' tissues in your body, your BODYFAT percentage (a proportional measure) will rise. You will get fatter, AND lighter.
A lot of 'anorexics' think they are fat because they can 'pinch an inch'; their skin has plenty of fat in it. Their doctors think they are skinny because bones are visible. Both are correct !
(If their bodyfat was low, MUSCLES would be visible, not bones. A really low bodyfat percentage would allow the surface texture of the muscles to show (bodybuilders call this 'ripping up'). Anorexics look 'skeletal' because their muscles have wasted away, allowing their (moderately fatty) skin to sag, feel flabby, and drape over the contours of the bones underneath.)
The amount of fat that is usually stored in the skin of a diagnosable anorexic, WOULD be very little for somebody with a normal physique. But because they have got rid of so much 'lean tissue' (mild or severe starvation even strips minerals out of the bones, making you lighter still), their bodyfat PERCENTAGE is often artificially high.
When you read anything about health improvement, try to always remember that WEIGHT (gain or loss) is not the same as FAT (eaten or stored). Changes in SIZE and SHAPE are usually NOT connected to bodyweight or to fatness.
"How much fat ?" :
It's difficult to get below 11 per cent, although three per cent is possible (bodybuilders and cyclists can do this, but they need to eat up to 8,000 calories a day to fuel the necessary amount of activity.
Some people have been measured at OVER 50 % fat. This is unusual; 'fat' people often have more muscle (hidden under the fat) than they think, because they are weight-training every time they move.
Fifteen to twenty per cent is excellent, and will show off a decent physique well. Up to 30 per cent can be perfectly healthy, although it's difficult to see any muscle definition with this amount of flesh in the way; it doesn't 'look fit'.
Theoretically, the fat stored on a 'reasonably' healthy body would keep you going for at least a month IF you could manage without any energy from elsewhere.
However, you can't.
Stored fat CANNOT be used as fuel. You will only release (convert) stored fat IF you are using a lot of fat as fuel already. That means you need to be getting a reasonable amount from your diet.
(If you're not, then your body will store as much as possible, economise on activity, and make it as difficult as possible to get any fat out of storage. As described already, almost every type of body tissue will be sacrificed to keep fat in storage!)
"If a person...?" :
Bodybuilders get their fat percentage so low by eating like a horse; this gets to be a habit. A lot of retired bodybuilders (and other sportspersons) keep the eating habit, and end up looking like they ate the horse.
Cyclists are usually better at this. It's a method of transport, so a lot of cyclists stay very active when they aren't competing any more. This allows them to gradually adapt to a different lifestyle, so that their fat-storage and fat-release systems can develop more 'normal' behaviour.
Most people's bodies respond better to gradual changes, than they do to sudden or severe changes. That's one reason why 'fad' diets work ('instant malnutrition' can really shift the weight), AND why they don't (your body gets used to the new regime, and learns to extract maximum nutrition from it).
