Add to this some chokehold, b/c passing out is a strong possibility.

I never understood this "be a man" crap. If your arm breaks, you're on the shelf for awhile. You can't train/compete/roll/anything else you might need that arm for. If you get your knee destroyed from a leg lock, is being "tough" worth not being able to walk? You can argue about going out from a choke, but look at Marlon Sims from TUF5. Lying flat on your face in the middle of the floor ISN'T embarrassing? I'd rather tap and congratulate the other guy before I need to be woken up surrounded by people.

It has been awhile since I trained, but when one or more of my joints were locked in a hold, I normally either tap out OR, if feasible, it is possible to turn in the direction that causes more pain and get out of the hold. This is not always possible, but it can be done if you're sufficiently flexible and willing to suffer a bit. Of course one runs the risk of dislocation, so I only tried this once or twice with experienced practitioners. So, tapping out was the usual response in training.

As for passing out, the only hold I've been in that put me in that danger was a choke hold, and if I'm able to turn my head ever so slightly, it is possible to clear the airway to give me time to counter the move, which I wasn't always able to do.

judomofo: "Unless you just had nice training partners who would let go rather than see you snap your own arm or leg." This was usually the case, and the techniques were not done at speed when this was shown. It was simply a method to avoid being put in a hold during a motion. I should have clarified.

Choke hold I pass out, done it many times, unless its against an opponent I don't know and there is not a third party present to tell him to when to let go, armbar or joint lock, tap tap tap overextension can cause serious injury.

I don't care how good a fighter is, nobody is going to make me pass out from an armbar, break my arm maybe, but not pass out.

Anyway, I'm not too proud to risk long term injury by refusing to tap out to an armbar, and passing out is more embarassing than tapping out if you ask me. In competitive Judo, I've had two chokes put on me in consecutive matches in my first tournament and the first time, I tapped, but the second, probably due to the fact that I had just tapped to a choke the first time, I passed out. I would much rather tap out than pass out if I have no chance of fighting out of the choke.

it depends on if it's a choke or an armbar/kneebar/anklelock. if you're in an armbar, the wise thing to do is tap because it's either that or having your shoulder dislocated or arm broken which would surely take monthes to recover from. in my opinion, there's no shame in tapping to an armbar if you know you're caught good.
if you're in a choke, i say go to sleep like a man.

I don't fight for sport, so even if I did tap it wouldn't do anything.

To judomofo, yes I do spar, and I teach my students how to fight effectively. There have been very few times in my life I haven't been able to escape a hold. Its called experience. I don't allow myself to be caught when sparring.

Tap out, of course. There are things you can't get out of. What's the point of sustaining an injury that may set you back months?

There is no shame in tapping out.

Humility is considered an attribute in martial arts. Stubbornness is not.

I would tap out, what would be the point in having your arm broken. I would rather lose and be able to fight again, over having months of treatment.

all you hard dogs out there who dont tap out are stupid. im sorry im not gonna be any less of a man if i tap out. you will be the man who is passed out or with a broken limb, and i will be the guy who is fully awake with no broken bones. and i will be able to fight another day, you on the other hand with your broken bones will not. your not going to look stupid if you tap if you dont tap you will look stupid when your laying on the canvas with people all around you trying to wake your *** up. you cant win them all and if you go around with that attitude that your unstoppable your gonna get it handed to you.
