I would like to go trouble is i have to be in work at 6am the next morning...and if it is a windup its the worst one ever because there won't even be a punchline -whoever did it needs to attend a winding up training course

maybe someone secretly fancies you and wants you there to get you drunk??

Hmm.. go along anyway, might be good fun, and then you will know everyone won't you.

Corporate parties are important for team building. For example, here's a great opportunity to get to know a co-worker better. Believe me. being pegged a team player is much better than being pegged a "loner" - even if you are a shy and quiet kind of person.

Introduce yourself to coworker and let them know you're looking forward to the party. Ask him/her if you should bring something (don't bring a date). Ask more experienced coworkers if there will be a collection taken for an office present - stick in about what you'd pay for lunch at a modest restaurant (say $10 or so)

BUT above all - go with the attitude that you're going to have a great time. Treat this as a compliment - not as a practical joke. Even if it was a joke - you can turn this to your advantage by going, having a good time, making new friends and showing the pranksters that you're a lot better person than they are.

Final bit of advice: NEVER EVER DRINK ALCOHOL AT A CORPORATE EVENT. Never. Ever. Even if everyone else is getting looped to the gills. You stay sober. Stick to sodas or OJ or something non-alcoholic. YOU want to be in control of the situation at all times.

Part of the work force is the unwritten rule to attend all kinds of parties, functions, etc. when we would honestly prefer not to go.

But it's work, so go. Don't worry about who put your name on some list - sweating the small stuff as it were - just go.

It's why they call it work.

do you dislike the person whose party it is?? if so,then make a polite excuse, and don`t go.
If there`s someone at the do that you don`t care for, keep clear of them, don`t get too drunk, and enjoy yourself-remember you`re there for the party boy/girl.
I gather from the tone of your message, you are not"one of the in-crowd";do you socialise with these people in and/or out of work?? maybe the invitee thinks you are a shy type, with few friends in work, and wants to"bring you out of your shell"??
Or maybe they want to "set you up" in some way;in which case, refer to my comments above.

Obviously someone wants you to go to the party. I would suggest you go to the party and have fun.

Grow up and delete your name from the list. What do you need our advice to do that for? Otherwise go, enjoy yourself and shut up!!
