Was John the Baptist a living example of family values or of the very Eastern practice of leaving the family behind to live a monastic life?

Was Jesus encouraging family values, or highlighting the value of a monastic life?

Jesus did teach family values. John was his cousin who foretold the coming of Christ and John is the one who invented the concept of baptism. Both family values and monastic life have redeeming qualities.

When Mary and John's mother were pregnant the two babies made simultaneous movements in the wombs of their mothers. The mothers hadn't seen each other since pregnancy. This indicates that they (Jesus & John) knew one another. Their lives were pre-determined.

Jesus and John were cousins for one thing. Another was that John was sent to be a forerunner for the coming of Jesus. John believed completely in God and Jesus from before birth.

No it was the sense of kinship in that both would be considered to be the Messiah. There are some churches still existing that believe that John was/is the son of god.

It may also have been an attempt by the gospel authors to incorporate the followers of John.
