How hard is it to read? I mean, seriously, how can those against Islam try to say that these say to go out and kill all nonmuslims for no reason? Notice it says drive them out "from where they drove you out" It says "Fight the oppressor" That would be a leader, not innocent men women or children just standing there. Why, in 2007, are some people so illiterate and uneducated? Anyway, what do you think? It also says if they stop fighting you, YOU stop fighting them.
"[002:191] Kill them wherever you find them. Expel them from where they drove you away. Persecution and oppression are worse than killing. Do not do battle with them near the sacred house of worship (Makkah), unless it is they who engage you in battle there. If they fight you there, then slay them (there). That is the due punishment for the disbelievers.
[002:192] If they desist, then of course Allah is the most Forgiving and the most Merciful.

[002:193] Fight (and confront) them till corruption and repression cease, and until faith in Allah (and justice) prevails! But if they desist, then let there be no aggression, except against the oppressors.

As salaamu 'alaikym warahmatullahi wabaraktuh, my sister and my friend.
Insha'Allaha, the problem seems to be in that persons who are tyring to use the Holy Qur'an so as to discredit or defame both Islam and the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) are, at best, reading translations of the Holy Qur'an and, thereby, not really reading the Holy Qur'an which must be read in Arabic for a full understanding as the Arabic language is a very rich and expressive language with many tones, shades and complexities of expression which simply do not translate completely nor totally correctly into any other language.
Not realizing this, those who only read in English (or French, Spanish, German, Japanese, Chinese, etc.) are not able to get the full meaning of the scriptures.
My suggestion to those who may be facing this problem, is that they find the mosque/masjid nearest to them (use "Islamfinder.com" to locate the same) and ask for assistance in understanding the Holy Qur'an. I assure all such person that they will not try to convert you! They will, however, greet you and make you feel welcomed, as well as do their best at explaining the varous surrahs of the Holy Qur'an to you as well as answers all of your questions.
Most masjids also offer courses in learning to read Arabic and you will be welcomed to attend.
For all of those who choose this course of possible actions, may Allah Subhanna wa Ta'ala guide you to the truth and a better understanding that will promote tolerance and peace among all peoples, as education and cooperation is the way to peace and brotherhood.
Ma'a salaam.

Assalam Alikum w/r w/b
THANK GOD... Finally someone cleared up those verses!!!
Whenever someone wants to prove that Islam is a violent religion, they always post a bunch of verses to support their claim.. And time and time again,I ALWAYS SAY, the either the quotes were taken out of context OR they were taken from an UNRELIABLE REFERENCE, meaning their quotes are NOT THE REAL ONES, THEY'RE FAKE. THEY HAVE BEEN ALTERED TO SUPPORT YOUR ARGUMENT..
Mashallah, a Muslim has finally cleared those quotes up..
P.S -- i will DEFF DEFF DEFF refer to these quotes when clearing any misconceptions about Islam... thxs so much, sister
May Allah (swt) put us all on the straight path

I am not Muslim, but I do not hate them, only the terrorists type. There are many Muslims where I live in California, and they do not seem to be any problem. I just cannot tolerate the ones fighting using their religion, blowing themselves up, flying into our buildings and killing thousands. I would hope that their religion does not tell them to kill the non-Muslims, because that would be bad. I have not seen that much of a radical type person in our area. I do not know much about their religion, only the way they act, and so far, it is ok. If you are saying that they should kill them, then their "Allah" must be.evil.

Quran is a book of true guidance, a word of God in His own grandiose sentences. But the criminals and dis-believer are misguided because of evil nature and hatred. Dont worry sister only God can guide.

Interesting. So....by your logic, if Muslims are to drive out people "from where they drove you out" then that would mean their goal is the reconstruction of the entire Ottoman empire? To include all of Europe of course.
I'm reading a book on the history of Islam. I'd be interested in your thoughts regarding the relationship between the Karmathians of old and the modern Shiite sect.

I agree. It saddens me to see how little understanding the Western world has of Jihad.
People, Jihad has two parts: greater Jihad and lesser Jihad. The greater Jihad is compulsory for all Muslims and refers to the struggle to resist temptation to do evil or to sin. This is the most important aspect of Jihad and is therefore called the 'greater' Jihad.
The lesser Jihad is compulsory only for men and refers to the struggle to drive opressors away like quoted above, so that all Muslims are free to worship Allah and all non-Muslims are free to worship their own gods. That is what is meant by justice.
Islam does NOT teach that all non-Muslim should be forced to accept Islam, that is in fact forbidden, as is the killing of innocent people, be they believers or non-believers. Those who think they'll go straight to heaven by blowing themselves up and killing innocent people couldn't be more wrong.
But the Palestinians fightng the Israelis who have taken over their land are doing the right thing, as that piece of land belongs to the Muslims. The Jews were not wanted in Europe and were forced onto the Palestinians and tried to take over. If the Jews had wanted to live in peace there wouldn't have been a problem, but that is not the case. Palestinian children are killed every other day for no reason whatsoever.
I don't blame all Jews as I realise a lot of them don't want war either, and I also realise that some Muslims may not be going about things the right way. But the fact remains that the war in Palestine is true Jihad.

The Qu'ran can be interpreted with a moderate voice, as you have done. The same Surah can be used by extremists to justify their acts of violence and terror. The Surah you have quoted has been used to justify the Palestinian suicide bombings in Israel. They forget the part where Allah instructs them to to fight within limits. When Muslims fight it must be within similar just war principles to the Christian doctrine (i.e. avoid civilian casualties if at all possible).

Yea I don't think its just those against Islam who are misinterpreting it then if that's the case. There seems to be plenty of muslims who it reads to alot differently.
Why is every single question you ask about this?

The holy Quran should never go without the explanation from Mohammed (pboh) himself or one of the 4 Imams, the context of a sura is very important to understand it well, anyone can take any portion of a text and misuse it for a specific deed.

Do you even read the excerpts of the Koran you post?
Here is a quote from your question: "Persecution and oppression are worse than killing"
That is why Muslims go out and kill people who make movies or cartoons about Islam. They believe that persecution is worse than killing.
As long as there are people who claim that the Koran is not the perfect word of God, many Muslims will claim that is persecution of Islam. I've seen that claim made by many Muslims here. It has even been made by you.
According to the quote you provided, that is all the excuse Muslims need for starting a war.
How can you fail to understand that persecution is not worse than killing? The Koran is wrong. Disbelievers should not be killed for telling the truth.
