How do i toilet train my two year old who has very poor speech?

I was to get started soon but he has very poor speech for his age. His intellect is fine, hes quite clever but his speech delay really prevents him from understanding simple instructions. He is now 2 years and 3 months. I do alot of work with him in relation to his talking and he will attend speech therapy. Slowly the words are coming but I just havent a clue how to approach toilet training. I have a 6 year old who was talking, no lie fron 6 months and he trained relatively easy. He understood what I asked of him! Anybody out there that has or had a similar situation to me?

I just potty trained my son and daughter. Even though your son's speech isn't perfect, he UNDERSTANDS. I like teaching my kids that they can do it themselves, that way I don't have to pressure or push my child. I knew just from your question you were talking about a boy not a girl! My first son was the same. I trained him at 2 yrs 4 months, his speech was poor and to be honest I should have waited at least another year. I persevered but it took a year before I could stop caryring spare pants and trousers around with me. He just kept having loads of accidents. My second son I left until he was 3 1/2. It was so easy he was dry withing 2 days at night as well. If your son has language delays for whatever reason he may just need more time in other areas too, so if I were you I would leave it if he struggles. By all means give him a go, but don't get despondent if he is not ready. Girls are very easy in comparision, for some reason boys find it harder!

It took me and my son a week, and he was deaf up until last summer!!!!! You just have to be very pacient and never shout when they have an accident, praise is what is needed all the time, even if they haven't been on the toilet, you don0't wanting them getting stressed out, once you've taken the nappy off, don't put it back on, apart from bed times, the worst thing you can do is put a nappy on if your going out, instead just take lots of clothes, and remember it won't be forever so keep CALM!!!!!!!!
Good luck and don't worry it will just all of a sudden happen, you'll still be lugging all the clothes around and not be using them:)

try sending him to the bathroom with your older son for about a week then take him to the bathroom and ask him if he wants to potty like big brother (he probably understands a lot more than you think). i would keep that up for a couple of weeks. if he doesn't start training, he's simply not ready yet. in a perfect world, every child would magically potty train on their 2nd birthday, but some kids bodies (and minds) are just not mature enough yet. my oldest son didn't potty train til he was 3 (and i tried and tried). it seemed like when i quit pushing the issue with him, he wanted to go. he went from wearing pull-ups to being a "big boy" literally overnight. my youngest used to follow him to the bathroom..by the time he was 2 1/2, he was completely trained because he wanted to "potty like bubby".

speech has nothing to do with it.
In our hse we have an "open door policy" ie: the kids see me and older children use the toilet, you can also make it fun by useing sign laungage - the sign for toilet is 2 fingers togeather, the middle finger & finger nearest the thumb & make a downward movement twice on your left breast if useing your right hand ! - I hope that makes sense !!
Personally I would say 2 is a bit young for training & I would wait for warm weather let him run in the gdn with a bare bum & leave pottys all over the place !!! Good luck.

Take it slow! And and maybe wait a little longer there is no shame. I know a few boys who aren't full toilet trained at 4 so.

One of my twins is getting there with the toilet, but the other isn't. He is slower in speech as he can't hear.

But honestly he will go when he wants to.

Hello. I have 5 kids total. Ages 5-20, I can tell you that they each were potty trained differently and at their own pace. My 2nd son was born deaf due to enlarged adnoids and didn't talk til after he had surgery at 3 1/2 yrs old. He was hard to train. I started training at 2 but he didn't fully understand or he was lazy, no matter he eventually got it. I took care NOT to punish or yell or make him feel bad if he had an "accident". I told him that he could pick out his favorite super hero under pants but could not wear them til he was potty trained as his ninja turtle wouldn't wish to be dirty or wet. Slow speech doesn't mean no speech. Use hand signals for now and work with his word for potty.
You said he is bright so he'll catch on quick.
Potty training will take time so don't rush it. Just be
patient.
