In my opinion, it is those German G36 series of weapons and the new generation of Kalashinikovs.

Opinions please.

AK-47 is extremely robust but not accurate.

I would prefer AK-101 or any of the newer AKs.

Even the German G36s are great and incredibly light.

AKs are heavy.

M-16 family. They are extremely adaptable (barrel length, secondary weapon systems, rail systems), lightweight, easy to shoot, and easy to maintain. Their perceived jamming problems are due to poor maintenance by ignorant soldiers (ignorant of proper cleaning with a brand new weapon, not that the soldiers were dumb) when they first entered service. I have used the M-16 for fifteen years, and I have had no jams with live ammo. I have had blanks jam, but that had to do with the ammo itself.

The only problem I have with the M-16 and it's variants is the cartridge. The 5.56mm is too small, and it should have been chambered for the 7.62mm.

Historically, in my opinion, i would rely on the ak-47 or the ak-74. Why? Due to the fact that: a. its the most reliable gun out there. neither mud, nor sand, nor snow will make it unfireable. B. Its damage it almost unbeatable as far as assault rifles go. If youve ever seen what a round fired from an ak-74 can do to a living creature youll understand what i mean. C. Its a classic. no matter where you are in the world, youve heard of the ak-47/74. its the most widespread assault rifle and had been ever since its invention.

World wide AK 47 for all the reasons that have been outlined. US - I am a big fan of the M14 It could be used in th assault and was still a rifleman's weapon. I think that at some point we will rediscover the art of rapid aimed fire. When the German Army ran up against British regulars at the start of WWII they thought that each rifleman had an automatic weapon because of the volume of effective fire. I think we will at some point get over the golden BB idea.

AK47 is reliable, but not accurate. The AK74 would be a better choice then the AK47.

Newer M16/M4's are more reliable then they used to be, but have a lot more accuracy and range then the AKs. A "maintained" M16/M4 if better. Maintained being the key word.

Modern: AK-47; there isn't anything you can do to that gun to get it to malfunction, you can literally bury it in the sand for 10 years dig it up and pull the trigger you still get a bang.
Historically: The WW2 BAR, IT SHOOTS THROUGH WALLS!! Enough said.
