1) If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
2) American ideas of freedom are the most hypocritical there is.
3) USA placed Saddam in Iraq, now they had to remove him. American foreign policy is a bunch of contradictory lies and all action is taken by the whims and fancies of the powers that be.
4) The people of the USA have no say in governance, especially what the federal govt. does with taxpayer money.
5) The UN is a lame-duck world governing body. Security council members don't need to bother with the UN. Even League of Nations was better.
6) Illegal actions will not have widespread international support.
7) American citizens are simply pawns in a Great Game of chess where Bush makes the moves.
8) Hearts and minds need to be won by fear because the USA doesn't know how else to do it, in a similar way as they say there are no atheists in foxholes (people worship God as they conform out of fear).
9) That slightly more than half of Americans are stupid to have reelected a tyrant to continue an unethical war.
10) That all of USA's problems on the home front are imaginary, a false-flag terrorism works well to brainwash "terrified" and ignorant civilian population.

Take a careful look at the position and influence of the Secretary of Defense. Had the military been allowed to plan and carry out the seizure and occupation of Iraq with the war plan that was originally presented we would, I believe, not be in the shape we are in. Note that I am taking the assumption that you mean a military lesson. The invasion of Iraq was a political mistake but that is another category.

How about some lessons learned:
You can't expect order to follow after toppling a dictatorship.
Don't count the oil before it's hatched.
Never get into a mess so big only Halliburton could clean it up.
American lives for oil is not a fair trade.
More American lives for not being called a cut and run president is not a fair trade either.
You can count on republicans to support an unjustified war to the end.
Analyze the consequences of your actions a little farther down the line than figuring out when to prematurely raise a "mission accomplished" banner.
You're either with Bush or against him.
Bushie, you did a heckuva job!

The many lessons have all been learned before - here are a few of them:
The best defense against tyranny is an armed populace.
Plan the peace before starting the war.
Motivated, lightly armed, irregulars will defeat poorly motivated, highly armed regulars - especially in urban combat.
You can't win hearts & minds with artillery
Bombing civilians creates new determined enemies.
Illegal actions will not have widespread international support.
War is always good for ammunition manufacturers and other defense contractors.
Be careful who you give artillery ammunition factories to - the shells make good improvised explosive devices.
The old proverb: "dont get involved in a land war in asia" applies to Asia Minor as well as the far east.

That as great a country as we are, it is very difficult to win a war when the media agenda is against it and when half of the politicians seek to undermine it in favor of political gain for themselves. When hatred for the commander in chief overshadows the goals and security of our nation, no matter how powerful we are, it will always be a difficult battle

Don't let the president use public nervousness (about terrorism) to fuel his personal agenda. No matter what Bush says, toppling Iraq's regime was on his agenda from the day he took office and he used terrorist attacks as an excuse to accomplish his aims.

That an 18 year old punk kid can become a man in less than 3 seconds over there, then gets to come home and realize nobody here cares. Then beg to go back where he had respect, was trusted, and felt like he was helping change the world, and get called crazy and stupid by people who have never seen what he has.

Never let a US tragedy sway your opinion, keep you from thinking straight or scare you into a war with someone who has nothing to do with the tragedy in the first place.

Uhhh...don't invade countries unless you actually have some sort of plan? Don't invade countries that aren't bothering you, period? Don't let chicken-hawk civilians get involved in military planning? Try and choose a Commander-in-Chief whose IQ is higher than that of most house plants? Be suspicious of any President who feels that God put him on Earth to spread freedom?
There's just so many lessons! You pick one!
