I have 4 cats and two of them are not fat but they are long haired and have excess skin so it makes them quite large and they are tall. I dont have a cat flap i usely let them out/in the door when they want to go out or come in. the only problem is they always come in and out so i was thinking about getting a cat flap but that might be too small for the big ones. so i was thinking more about a dog flap! lol. I've seen them before but aren't they dangerous. A skinny man might get through one or be able to stick a pole though it at night and grab stuff from my house! i know it sounds silly but are they safe?

and by the way...
I live in england. and my road hardly ever has cars coming down it thats why i let my cats go out. I have had 2 of my cats for 8 years now and they have been fine outdoors.

A cat flap is an excellent way of allowing your cats necessary freedom, unlike so called catloverme123, it is actually cruel to keep them cooped up indoors, only a cat say that's got a specific illness that prevents them going out( for instance a blind cat),should be kept indoors, and my sister even lets her blind cat out for a roam in her garden under her supervision, nice fresh air does the cat the world of good, as for them getting poisoned, well that's the small risk you've got to take, my cats went outside and in their long lifetime were never harmed, cats are much more independent than dogs, I personally wouldn't want a dog flap for the reasons you mentioned, however if opening the door all the time is awkward then try one, make sure its infrared, your pets will need to wear special collars and when they are detected the cat/dog flap will only open up when they are around, giving extra security, if you live in a relatively quiet neighbourhood you should be okay, but its better to be safe than sorry, good luck!

I have 5 cats that are allowed to go out to the enclosed patio from the house through a cat flap. I also have a closet dedicated to housing the litter box and installed a cat flap in that door as well. I have large boned as well as overweight cats and they fit through without any problems at all.

Depends where you live. We have a cat flap in our back glazed door and our cats come and go as they please - we consider it unnatural and cruel to keep them shut in all day. Get a dog flap for a small dog - a person wouldn't be able to get through that. You could easily be overestimating how big you need the flap to be - it's a snug squeeze though for most cats through a standard cat flap and it is perfectly ok.

Door flaps do come in many different sizes. Check with pet shops to see which one will fit your needs best. Hope this helps!

no, they aren't safe, your cat could get out and will get run over by a car, eaten by an animal, poisoned, lost, tortured by some stupid person that might think it's fun, (how sick) or anything else that can happen. keep your cats inside where they will be safe, happy and healthy
