When they catch you its a lengthy trip to a military prison.
Civilian prisons could learn a lot from these institutions

It all depends how long you are AWOL for to the severity of the punishment and how often you have been in trouble. It could range from detention in your own barracks for 7 days or a trip to the military prison at Colchester. Either way some people I know just kept going missing and getting locked up it would have been easier to just kick them out. But the Military being the way they are they cannot be seen to have lost so they will get you in the end.

It really depends on what type of absense without leave we're talking about here.

In one case, a member of my unit was technically 'AWOL' when he failed to show up for parade night because he was sick, but by coincidence the battery clerk was away too and the call he left on her answering machine was left unheard. A bit of a chewing out, but nothing said after that.

Cases of absense without leave are judged according to severity. Administrative punishment or court marshal? If you nipped off the base for a few hours for a drink when you weren't supposed to, probably the former - not a severe punishment, but a complete nuisance at the very least. If you commited full-out desertion, most definately the latter. Typically a military prison sentence would result from it, but who knows? Some instances of desertion have a solid defence.

It depends how long you go AWOL. 48 hours or so and you'd get Jankers or maybe a day or two in the guardroom. If its permanent and you are caught, you will almost certainly go to Colchester Military Prison for at least 3 months and more.
Believe me, the first time you answer back to the Redcaps in there will be your last time. Its a brutal place run with an iron fist.

A guy I know went AWOL after coming back to the UK from Germany. Liked Germany didn`t like his home base.
The MP`s kept calling at his house but never found him.He eventually gave himself up,to the civvy police, while he was drunk on Christmas Eve.
He was collected by the MP`s, and appeared before his CO the following day and sentenced to 90 days in the glasshouse.
As well as having to clean his kit every day he had to clean his dustbin. You could always tell when his mother was going to visit him, she was in the local shop buying Brillo pads and metal polish.
Cheeky monkey, when he was released he asked for the dustbin.

Depends on how long?

Maybe looking fro extra duties

Or Colchester prison.

People who go AWOL are losers and cant hack the pace of army life.

A mate of mine went AWOL he'd had enough of the crap so he toddled of one day from barracks. Four months later he turned up went off and joined the foreign legion it took four months to P check him and find out he was still in the British Army...Pillock he got away with it, post tramatic stress and all that tried topping hisself a few weeks later missed his head and shot his ear off. Hit Civvy street pretty quick after that and he probally still a Pillock.

Arrested and AWOL for drink driving. He had been a deserter since 2002. The Red Caps came down to our cell block and made him clean the cell and asked the custody sarge if that was clean enough for them ( it was spotless, after mopping out! ) He was then marched to a waiting Land Rover. The Red Caps are ard astards!!. Shouldn't off beeb! me at 2.00am in your car as I crossed the road!

Depends how long you've been AWOL. The longer it is, the worse it gets. If it's only a short time then it at be dealt with at regimental level.

If you are lucky you will serve some time i n the guardroom under punishment. if you are not lucky you will be tries by Court Martial and spent a period in a Military Prison. I understand that few serve a second sentence, but when they return to their unit they have the smartest kit in the Army.

In the British army you go to the glass house but in the American national guard if you go AWOL you get to become Americas president.
