When I'm driving along the road, then reach the hill, should I brake before shift to low gear? Or just release foot from gas pedal then shift to low gear? Or do nothing! Just keep the gear at "D" position? Thnaks in advance. From Cambodia

Leave it on D, Manufacturers aren't even sure of how to properly use the gears on a vehicle and you can tell from their owners manual. In the manual they always recommend to use 2 when towing a vehicle as for L usually says use at low speeds and state certain KM or Mi. Which does not really answer anything else, as how about when you get stuck can you use L or does it produce too much power and the wheels will spin over the max speed. What I get from the vehicles owners manual is keep it in D at all times. Maybe in the future they can improve the owners manuals to actually help on using the vehicle. GOOD LUCK AND have fun with your vehicle

They can be used for engine braking so you don't have to overuse the brakes on a long decsent or they can help you bring a large load to a stop, especially if it's on a downhill stretch. I don't know how steep of roads you have but here in Colorado, there are downhill stretches that will overheat your brakes if you don't shift the transmission down and let the engine help hold you back. You should have an overdrive button that lets you select 3rd gear (D goes up to 4th). This 3rd gear can be used to hold you back on highway hills. 2 and L hold you back more, but only under certain speeds or the engine will over-rev.

Leave the car in drive.

L is usually used to begin moving, especially when the car is heavily loaded, you begin on a slope, you are driving on uneven ground, with ruts and potholes.

2 is used to upshift from L. When the ground evens out, but you still need power, shift from L to 2.

When you are driving on a paved surface, asphalt, concrete, cobble stones, or other hard packed surface, use D.

An automatic transmission is not built like a manual 4 speed. It does not need to be downshifted and upshifted during normal driving.

I hope this helps.

You should leave your auto in D, drive, it is automatic and it will shift when it needs too..... L and 2 are for when you are towing or you want to shift manually.... but you dont really need to use them.
