They should date each other for about one year before marriage. Courtship is an old term for dating, or dating exclusively. Your friend should have walked out on that deal after a year. The guy may have never proposed because he was never really sure about her and maybe after 6 years with her, he met another woman who had all the qualities that your friend didn't have that he may have felt was missing. And who knows what those qualities are, only the guy knows for sure.

Courtship is dating. If a man dates a woman for too long before making a commitment, they are less likely to make one. Generally speaking, they should know within two to three years if the love that person enough to make a commitment.

Courting is dating, you go out and spend nice evening together, it becomes less of a courtship once you have gotten comfortable with your partner and stop going out so much.
I know people who have been together for over 10 years and never gotten married, and i also know some people who are together for a short while and just know they are with the one they want.
I have been with my partner for 3 years and we have recently gotten engaged.
it all depends on the couple and how they feel.

Old fashioned term for dating.
However long you wait before you get married it doesnt guarantee it wont end in heartbreak.
You know someone for 3 seconds and get married and be together forever, or you could be together 10 years and then get married. It might end 10 minutes later.
Thats why people say relationships are about trust.

7 years Iv been with him and the question has never been mentioned - except when we see bridal cars he comments that its someone going to the guillotines. I was previously married for 20 years and I don't think I would do it again, when you marry them they change, they become lazy and unromantic and demanding. Ask your parents they will tell you the same.

It all depends of people, the midlle from which they come from, their country of origin and culture, etc.
Also, it happens sometimes that people fall deeply in love with someone and wait for years, either because they are too shy, or because the other is not interested.
