When the British were put in control of Helmand Province I said it would be a matter of weeks rather than months before they were howling for help. Now their rescuers (NATO) are unable to control the country, or the opium trade.

I wonder how long NATO forces can last too.
How is it the Soviets failed, and they had up to 80,000 soldiers, yet NATO with 38,000 soldiers thinks it can do the job? Even the former Foreign Minister of Germany has called for more German soldiers as of August 18th, 2007.

NATO can continue to operate there for as long there is political will to do so.

that Political will will last as long as the public supports the action. if the support ebbs away the Politicians will ultimately change policy. Its unlikely that the current government would withdraw from Afghanistan.... Brown was complicit in the illegal Invasion of Iraq AND this adventure in Afghanistan..... although Afghanistan appeals more to his need to meddle in other peoples / other countries affairs in hi usula 'Gordy know best approach'.

To counter that the government, MOD & other sources are trying to talk up the action in Afghanistan, trying to hide the casualties, the deaths the problems. But at the same time it is limiting what our armed forces can do, in terms of what can be attacked, what supplies they get, how servicemen are treated.

In many ways its like Vietnam...... the lack of support, the interference of the Politicians is hindering the armed forces, tasked by the politicians to do a specific job from doing that job. Unless the politicians give full support this adventure like Iraq will fail. Buit it will be OK, becuase all the servicemen killed, injured will have laid down thier lives for the "honour" of the politicians in whitehall, and the self styled 'great and good' of the chattering classes in Islington and self styled "progressive" media like the Guardian Media Group & Channel 4

You seem to be under the impression that the NATO Forces are in dire straights in Afghanistan!

Its a question of how long can the Taliban hold out against NATO.

As the British are part of NATO according to you they are rescuing themselves !!

Go and research the subject before attempting to be a TROLL!

NATO is doing just fine against the Taliban. Sometimes it seems that they are moving slow or that they are at a stand still, but they have yet to actually lose ground to the Taliban. Problem is, that contrary to the neocon propaganda, it is those that we supported and were fighting the Taliban and al-Qaeda before 9-11, were and are the ones growing opium.

Eliminate the evil deeds of Pakistan's ISI and you might be able to eradicate the murdering Talibans.

Pakistan’s sinister Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) remains the key to providing accurate information to the US-led alliance in its war against Osama bin Laden and his Taliban hosts in Afghanistan. Known as Pakistan’s ‘secret army’ and ‘invisible government’, its shadowy past is linked to political assassinations and the smuggling of narcotics as well as nuclear and missile components.

The ISI also openly backs the Taliban and fuels the 12-year-old insurgency in northern India’s disputed Kashmir province by ‘sponsoring’ Muslim militant groups and ministering its policy of ‘death by a thousand cuts’ that so effectively drove the Soviets out of Afghanistan and led to their political demise.

The goings on behind the ISI’s nondescript headquarters, located behind high walls on Khayban-e-Suharwady avenue in the heart of the capital Islamabad and its operational offices in the adjoining garrison town of Rawalpindi, have dominated Pakistan’s domestic, nuclear and foreign policies – especially those relating to Afghanistan – for over two decades.

Yeah Yeah yeah iv heard it all before! If you want to delude yourself by making such comments then go ahead its only you who look stupid.. NATO isn't beaten .. NO where near and it will continue to kill Taliban rebels in their hundreds every chance it gets.

The opium poppy issue is another matter. Its eradication is been hampered by the continual corruption of government officials who obviously make lots of money from assisting the poppy growers in peddling their filthy product.

Taliban consists of local people. They know every nook and corner of Afghanistan.Islamic fundamentalists give financial and moral support.Outside people are trapped and killed by Taliban. There is no hope of ending Taliban by outside forces.Opium trade is a method for funding terrorist activities. You have only two options ;-
1)Leave Afghan people to their fate .
2)Destroy that country and people.

As long as the political will lasts.
maybe a few months,
maybe a few years,
maybe a few generations - and maybe many.

The fighting will continue till the last invader leaves.
