I'm in the Army, currently stationed at Fort Drum and on leave in Indiana right now. I bought a new car here and am driving it back to post. This got me thinking. Am I going to have any trouble getting on to post?

Do you think I will need to show my vehicle registration at some point? I haven't gotten my car registered yet because the dealership said it'll be 2-3 weeks before they can mail the title.

I know to drive your vehicle on post it needs to be "registered" on post as well, and they'll put a sticker on your windshield. Don't you need to show your registration (as well as other info) to get this done.

I just don't know. I didn't think of this before and I am really afraid I'll get stopped at the gate and have to abandon my car or something.

I just did this with a brand new car. Most bases you'll take in your temporary registration, your driver's licenses, your MIL ID and your proof of insurance to the pass and ID office, usually the one outside the main gate. Then they'll issue a temporary pass that you display on your dash to get on and off base. Once you get your final registration you have to go back in with all the same stuff plus the temp pass and get your stickers.

Oh, and for NM the temporary registration was the "licenses" cardboard that the dealership gave me. I had to take it out of the back window to bring it in to the office.

And double oh, if you go in the first time when pass and ID is closed you can sometimes get a temporary day pass from the gate guards with the same information.

In 22 years in the Air Force I never had any problems like you describe. Everywhere I was stationed including Fort Lee, VA I was able to get a temporary pass while my paperwork cleared. I think you are concerned about nothing. Just be sure you are insured and can prove it. Also carry your sales contract and be sure your temporary registration is prominently displayed.

Congrats on the new car. And thanks for putting the uniform on everyday. Some of us old soldiers appreciate what you are doing. Good luck.

All you need is the bill of sale for now since you have a temporary tag until the registration arrives. Once it arrives, you will have to register the vehicle as normal.

Bought a used car myself.

The other posters are right. You didn't say if your car is new or used, but if it's used, do yourself a favor, and either go to the local PD and explain the situation, and see if they will have the drug dogs sniff your car. I had a friend who didn't do this, and got in a lot of trouble for something that the previous owner had left in the car. If you local PD won't do it, then ask the base police to do this for you BEFORE you take the car on base.

i would not think so just tell the gate guard that it is a new car and you are waiting for the dealership to mail you the paper work. You should of got something from the dealership showing you just bought the car. they will understand. Try to get your car requested asap after you get onto post

You have your bill of sale. You should have paperwork that shows you are waiting on registration documents from the state that the dealer will provide to you. To get on post, your Military ID, DL and proof of insurance should do it. You will then have to go to the Provost Marshal's office and have your car inspected and get your decal. Once you get your perm plates, notify the PMO and you should be straight.

yes, you will need registration proof, as well as proof of insurance. Otherwise, you might not be able to bring it on base at all, not even with a temporary pass.

gimpalomg is correct here. They will issue a temporary pass, just have all the basics with you, proof of insurance, proof of ownership, military ID, yadda yadda yadda.

You paid money and you don't know if you have a clear title to it! Isn't that illegal, in NY state? Listen I have a perfectly good bridge I want to sell you really really cheap! Where does the US Army find these people?
