My friend has been in a car crash and is unconcious in hospital. The doctor said that he is non responsive to the left side of the brain, however I saw him move his left hand and foot. What does this mean?

Much of what is known about the functional differences between the left and right sides of the brain has been derived from studies on patients whose corpus callosum has been severed as a treatment for severe epilepsy.

Regarding non responsive left side of brain means The studies have shown that the left side of the brain controls most analytic functions, speech and language; the right side controls artistic attributes and the ability to recognise patterns (such as how rooms and corridors, houses and streets, and hills and valleys are related in space). The two halves of the brain communicate with each other – nerve messages are sent between the across a thick band of nerve fibres called the corpus callosum.

Other studies have determined that two areas of the left hemisphere of the cerebral cortex govern speech and language. One area is responsible for vocabulary and grammar, while the other governs the physical mechanism of speech. -

the nerve endings cross over at the base of the head so the left side of the brain controls the right side of the body and vice versa. Therefore if your friend has non responsive from the left side of the brain then it will be his right side that will have no movement.

I hope he gets better soon

Left side of the brain controls right half of the body. If his right hand and foot are moving, it can be presumed that the left side of his brain is working.

It may affect his right side coz SOME of the bodys motor actions are controlled by opposite sides ie
left-right
righ-left.
But NOT all functions ask the doctors looking after him.
If they will not tell you because you are not a relative then ask his parents or other relatives ,im sure they will be glad you are concerned and tell you.
