I always make my own, never buy ready made sauces. It depends what I have in the pantry but I generally use Oregano, Basil, Italian seasoning, some chilli flakes or fresh chillies. I like to fry some pepperoni with the meat, which add to the flavour. You can buy tins tomatoes now with basil, red wine, chilli or whatever. I find you still need to add more herbs and spices as the flavour will be bland otherwise.

Just made one yesterday. I started with caned diced and crushed tomatoes so I needed to season it from scratch. Other than seasoning remember that other vegetables help with the flavouring like onions, garlic, celery. You can also get creative and substitute broth cubes for salt and other fruits like apples for some of the tomato (remember tomato is a fruit), and of course red wine or other fruit juice for the sugar.
I used:
Salt
Sugar
Black pepper
Ground chipotle pepper
Oregano
Basile
I fined that a little bit of heat, just a little in the background makes the sauce that much homier.

Theres a blend of spices sold called "Italian seasoning" that you can't go wrong with. It doesn't contain garlic so you have to add that as well as salt and pepper.
