I'll be quite honest with you, I had once asked that exact(well, almost exact) same question (and if others are honest, I bet they did too), though, unfortunately for me at that time, I had nobody telling me otherwise, that is until, I decided to educate myself
now I'm studying for a life science degree
here's a link to a website that hopefully you'll read

I believe that the more proper way to formulate this is that humans, apes, and chimpanzees evolved from a common ancestor. As well, there is nothing to stop a species from moving into a new ecological niche and evolving while other members of the same species who didn't make the move stay relatively the same. As for *hard* evidence, what do you call fossils (play rim shot, that was an intentionally bad pun).

I can definitely say that we were NOT taught that in school. In the 70's we were taught a theory that humans and apes 'probably' shared a common primate ancestor - which is now extinct - and this theory has since been proven with DNA evidence. As far as apes no longer existing, well, all apes are endangered species, doomed to extinction if we don't interfere. Did you notice that indigenous (primitive) humans are also relatively endangered? Look at Australian Aborigines, or what happened to the Incas, Aztecs, Maya, etc.? Will you say that they are not of the same race as we are? So, if humans really came from humans, does that mean humans shouldn't exist?
There are different races of humans to consider, also (i.e. black/white, etc.). Even if we considered them different species, they had to come from a common ancestor, don't you think? Because if you think otherwise, then there would only be one race, no?
Not only are we from the gorilla line, we are also more directly from the chimpanzee line. Gorillas were ancestors of chimpanzees, and chimps were our ancestors. According to fossil and living DNA evidence, chimps and humans split into different lines (due to mutations, which also can be observed for many creatures) circa 10-15 million years ago. Consider the tadpole that turns into a frog - you can actually WATCH this happen! This is an example of fast-forward evolution. Which is why it's no wonder why amphibians are credited with being the phylum class linking almost all other animal species in some way.
There are also other theories, notably:
A Jewish folktale claims that one of the races who built the Tower of Babel became apes as punishment, while Muslim lore says that the Jews of Eilat became non-human apes as punishment for fishing on the Sabbath. Some sects of Christian have folklore that claims that these apes are a symbol of lust and were created by Satan in response to God's creation of humans (the fallen angels/demons came to the earth and mated with the human women - thier children were an abominable copy - monkeylike - of God's creation.). It is uncertain whether any of these references are to any specific apes. All of these concepts date from a period when neither the distinction between apes and monkeys, nor the fact that humans are apes, was widely understood, or understood at all.
You can believe the religious theories, or the proven scientific theories. I choose to believe the latter, because although I'm a Christian, I was given a reasoning mind to use, and I have the God-given right to choose truth from fiction. Truth can always be proven, and it will set me free.
If, one day, it is proven that God, as my religion sees him, does not exist, I will also be compelled to use that same reasoning power.
I believe that the reason why we have technology is because our minds are evolving - 200 years ago there were much fewer people who could fathom the laws of Physics - now even a 9-year-old can comprehend it, because it can be seen, and experienced, and put to use...look all around you!
Most religions in the world today cannot fathom science, because they refuse to let thier minds grow as God intended, and this results in further controversy and dispute about God, instead of systematically narrowing the belief down to truth, they amplify the belief to be as good as mythology.
I fear that this will mean, eventually, the extinction of spiritualism and the belief in a Creator, or, the division of humankind to separate species and niches (ecological habitats), one that survives without science, and the other that survives with science. Without science, we are doomed to push ourselves back into prehistoric agenda.
Which would be considered the higher species then? Do creationists ride bicycles, use canned foods, wear synthetic clothing, use the internet, etc., etc.,? If so, WHY? Why do we need all that science? Why not let God magically provide these things? And if we must say that God created science for our benefit, then why do we deny it? Please stop contradicting yourselves. It's not Christ-like. Or is it?
Will my Christian descendants look to scientists as to God and His Heavenly Army?

Once upon a time, there was a band of chimpanzees wandering through the forest in search of food.
They came to a stream at the edge of the forest with a savanna on the other side.
Half of the chimpanzees crossed over the stream to search for food in the savanna. The other half remained behind in the forest.
The two groups never met again.
After many generations of living apart, the descendants of the two groups met each other. They were now different because their environments had naturally selected for different traits to survive.
The chimpanzees on the savanna had begun to evolve into humans. The chimpanzees in the forest had remained chimpanzees.
Why exactly do you think the survival of the chimpanzees on the savanna would have required those in the forest to die? There is no reason it would have. That is why one species can evolve into multiple different ones after the population becomes divided.

"So im not a scientist,..." This speaks volumes right here. You don't need to be a scientist to understand the basic concepts of evolution. Do a little research, because you're topic question has been answered...REPEATEDLY.
"So why the hell was i taught this in school?" Because there is HARD evidence, and the theory has been proven as FACT.
The difference between the fact of evolution, and the fact of creation is simple. Evolution has happened, and will continue to happen, whether or not you accept it as fact. Creation will fall to the wayside, and be relegated as myth without your belief.
*DRINKS, yet again*

There are volumes of hard evidence that the Thoery of Evolution is a fact. A scientific theory is a FACT - Like the theory of gravity.
That is why it is taugh in school.
You obviously have been duped by the creationist that are promoting a false agenda by publicly redifining the word theory to be the equivelant of a hypothesis.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wedge_strategy
The real question you should be asking, and I will do it for you, is why does a religious group have to lie to people to garner support? They were caught flat out in the Dover, PA. trial while under oath.
The Wedge Document outlines a public relations campaign meant to sway the opinion of the public, popular media, charitable funding agencies, and public policy makers. According to critics, the wedge document, more than any other Discovery Institute project, demonstrates the Institute's and intelligent design's political rather than scientific purpose.
The document sets forth the short-term and long-term goals with milestones for the intelligent design movement, with its governing goals stated in the opening paragraph:
"To defeat scientific materialism and its destructive moral, cultural, and political legacies"
"To replace materialistic explanations with the theistic understanding that nature and human beings are created by God"
There are three "wedge projects," referred to in the strategy as three phases designed to reach a governing goal:
Phase I: Scientific Research, Writing & Publicity,
Phase II: Publicity & Opinion-making, and
Phase III: Cultural Confrontation & Renewal.

If man evolved from a certain very specific kind of ape then that would explain why we no longer see that ape, they don't say that man evolved from ALL apes. We may not have evolved from those that exist today as they are evolutionary dead ends. They are similar but not our originator.

No that's a common mistake that people make, humans, evolved to fulfill a specific niche, within their ecosystem. Just because you have a microwave doesn't mean that you would throw out your stove. Just as everything evolved from single cell bacteria, doesn't mean that bacteria goes extinct. As long as a species can still successful survive and thrive in it's ecosystem it will continue to exist.

If a man came from a dust of a rock there would be no more a rock ur right!!!!
Seriously, dude, you went to a bad school. Humans and apes share a common ancestory, but 'apes' did not turn into humans.
PS Do you think there is actually an animal called just an 'ape'?
