Theists, how would you react if you found that the God you believe in was not true. This is not a statement saying your god is false, but rather a question of how you would get on with life. I would imagine most of you would do fine after some readjustment, but am curious what your standpoint is at this time. I believe I am aware of the the multiple factors involved with your beliefs, and I have been there before. I also understand that many of you will feel such a strong pull towards your faith that you think it to be impossible that your God could be false, I ask you just use your imagination and pretend such a thing were possible.

Thanks

I'll answer in two parts since I'm not exactly sure what your question is.

A) As a Christian, the God I believe in is Jesus Christ. If it turned out to be "not true", then I would have to accept that I had been wrong about that but I would still believe that God is real and that He is a God of Love, even if there were no Jesus.

B) If you are saying that Theism were found to be "not true" and Atheists were right, then I would have to accept that I had been personifying Love and all that is good and right into a god. But I would still believe in Love and all that is good and right. So I guess not much would change but for one thing. My self confidence would take a terrible beating because I was so sure that Christ was real. I would have a hard time getting my confidence back.

I hope that answers it. Questions such as this have been asked many times by Atheists here, and they always get upset when Christians refuse to go along with the hypothetical. I don't have to ask an Atheist how they would react if they were to learn that Jesus was real, because I already know the answer: They would be overwhelmed with joy and there would be no sense of loss at all.

I'm not sure how it could be proven there is no God, how do you prove a negative?

But assuming you were able to convince theists that on the balance of probabilities there is no God then I think it would lead to a complete breakdown of morality and law and order, far Worse than we have seen so far from liberals and the ACLU (American Communist Lawyers Union) banning the Bible and the 10 Commandments from every aspect of public and Government life and making it politically incorrect (a hate crime even) if anyone dares to speak out about corruption or immorality. Schools can teach humanism and evolution but are banned from mentioning creationism. No wonder our kids have become so lawless.

I mean why not? If we are just here because of a freak accident of nature and we evolved from pond slime, then life is just a random event that has no purpose and no value - so it doesn't matter how we behave or what we do.

What does it matter if we kill someone, they are only here due to an accident anyway?

What does it matter if I pick on those weaker than me, if I lie, cheat and steal - it's natural - it's called survival of the fittest!

Do you think the rules of society will keep things in check?

The Governments of society created by Atheists and secularists have killed far more people than the religious ones, especially in the last few centuries: Hitler, Mao and Stalin alone top anything religious fanatics have done. Throw in Pol Pot, Saddam Husssein, Ho Chi Minh, Idi Amin and the imbalance is even greater.

Can you see what a slippery slope this would be if the whole world became atheists and abandoned the idea of a higher power to whom we would one day be accountable? If the only law was what WE decided the law was? (It was legal to exterminate cripples and retards in Nazi Germany).

Just look at what a mess the UN and world leaders have already made of this planet through running things man's way!

How much worse would it be if everyone was an atheist and there was no one to protest against graft, corruption, immorality and inhumanity?

How many atheists seek to protect the lives of unborn babies? How many atheists champion the cause of the weak and downtrodden? How many atheists strongly condemn immorality?

Yes there are some atheists who are against those things, but where do they get the moral authority from? Whose standards of decency are they upholding and why should anyone listen to them when all they are expressing is man's opinion of how you should behave? Who are they to tell me what I should or shouldn't do?

But if there is a God and one day I have to face him...

Have u ever thought that science is something that we discovered and did not create and when we hold the discoverer in such high esteem then what abt the Creator. The science, universe all arnd us did not suddenly one fine day decide to come into being and if it did not then who did create it in such perfect balance and harmony.
I think that after looking at the world arnd us: the nature, the beauty, the science you can hardly expect ppl to sit stupidly and say it was all created on its own. Ppl who can think will think and appreciate and draw inferences.
So after looking all arnd me and thinking as hard as I can I cannot pretend in the face of the mounting proof that God could be false.

Oh.. good question. I firmly believe that there would be civil unrest and political chaos if all religions came to realise in an instant that there was no god. That realisation would be a miracle, though wouldn't it!

I think, as an apathetic agnostic, if there is a god at all, it is the conscience and consciousness of mankind. If there is any faith or hope at all remaining should "religion" become "enlightened", then that hope and faith is in humanity.

I think most theists would agree that religion in many ways is a way of life coupled with belief, and if God were to not exist, i believe they would agree that a religious life is a happy one. I do not believe that a theist, having the foundation of his/her faith demolished, would have regrets about they life they've lived. It's one that is simple, peaceful, and predictible. Like you've said, i agree that most would quickly adjust, and then party on like there's no tomorrow.

If you are following God with the help of your intellect, that will be 'false god'.

You claim to be an atheist, but we all are, until the time we stop using our fantastic intellect in deciding about being a theist or an atheist!

If there was irrefutable proof that my God did not exist, then I would become Agnostic. There are really only three monotheistic religions in this world, and they all believe in the same God. I believe that a monotheistic God is the only god-type that makes sense, so I would search for a new possibility as to his identity.

This is exactly what happens when a person learnes what the Bible teaches, and realizes that what their priest or pastor has taught them for years is simply wrong.
J.W's preach the Bible from door to door, and many people are shocked to learn, FROM THE BIBLE, that jesus is NOT God himself, but his son and completely separate.
Example;
(John 5:19) Therefore, in answer, Jesus went on to say to them: “Most truly I say to YOU, The Son cannot do a single thing of his own initiative, but only what he beholds the Father doing. For whatever things that One does, these things the Son also does in like manner.

I feel like thats the issue in general.....

People that do believe in god and their religion have that in the back of their mind.....what if???? Atleast if you are open minded about religion.

You can't "prove' god exists...so at the same time....you can't prove god doesn't exists. I always like to throw in here...in science...you can't "prove" anything exists....if you have any understanding of science past high school and the first few years of college. ...gotta atleast hit introductory quantum physics, which is generally physics 4, to start to get this understanding.

Yeah.....to trying to shoot down your question...but i don't' think its really valid.

It would, in the end, make no difference in the way I live my life. I would still treat others as I want to be treated, and I would still be a good, moral person.
