Well, it all depends. There are lots of different kind of jobs in lots of different fields.

Master Sergeants usually are on staff and 'have control of' 2-8 Soldiers in a particular staff section.

1st Sergeants (same pay grade as Master Sergeant, but a special rank for a special job) are the senior enlisted Soldiers in a company. But companies are different sizes... An airborne infantry company could be over 100 Soldiers. But some other branch companies could have only 30 Soldiers in it. And a headquarters company could easily have 250 Soldiers in it -- about half of them officers who would not consider themselves 'under the control of' the company 1SG.

Same with Staff Sergeants etc... it depends on the job. A staff sergeant could be an infanty squad leader with 9 Soldiers in his squad... or a tank commander with only 3... or on staff and really have no one working directly for him/her at all.

A Master Sergeant is usually employed in a staff position under an appointed commissioned officer, Like S-1 (personnel) S-2 (Intel) S-3 (Operations and Training) or S-4 (Supply and Logistics). They usually have a few subordinates in their shop but not many.
A First Sergeant is the same pay grade as a Master Sergeant but in a leadership role in a Company/Troop/Battery sized unit. Usually 80 to 130 troops.
Staff Sergeants have a wide range depending on their MOS and position. A SSG Infantry Squad leader has about 6 to 8 guys in their squad broken down into two fireteams and aided by fireteam leaders (usually a SGT or a CPL), usually. A SSG Tank commander has 3 guys, a loader, driver and gunner. It's hard to fit anymore guys inside a tank than 4. I have seen 3 man tank crews before and it is less efficient if the tank is a man short but still combat ready. One of the engagements on the standard tank gunnery range for individual crews is a 3 man crew shot. The Tank commander takes the shot.
A SSG Supply sergeant usually has one or two subordinates working the supply room unless they have fuel or ammo hauling duties and they may have more.

A Masters Sergeant will usually only be in charge of a few since they are mostly staff.

If they are in a company position as a 1st Sergeant, depending on they type of company, 13 in smaller detachment sized companies such as a Basic Training Company Cadre or AC/RC, to 300+ in some Headquarters Companies.

Sergeant First Class is a platoon sergeant generally, again depending on the type of company his platoon is part of, 3 to 70+.

Staff Sergeant is generally a squad leader 6-14.

Sergeant is generally a team leader, 1-4.

A 1st Sergeant (1stSgt) is in charge of a single company of soldiers and answers to either a Master Sergeant (MSgt), Sergeant Major (SM) or Command Sergeant Major (CSM).

Try this website for an explanation that give you a table.

The 1st Sgt is in charge of a company.
The MS or CSM has 4 1st Sgts anwering to him or her.

The individual numbers change depending on the type of unit and the mission. The numbers have also changed historically depending on the size of the overall Army.

I hope this helps.

First of all master sgt and 1st sgt are the same rank (E8) but a MS emphasis is more on their job where a 1st sgt leads soldiers. Typically you'll find master sgts in matinance platoons and what not. A 1st sgt is in charge of the enlisted soldiers in a company. E9 is the enlisted leader of a battalion, some times brigade and a csm is the senior enlisted soldier of a brigade or division. A ssgt E6, depending on how many of them are in a company can be a platoon sgt, squad or team leader. E7's sgt1st class, is the platoon sgt, and in the absence of a 1st sgt, acts as a company 1st sgt.

That all depends, a 1SG of a company will have between 90 and 120 under his wing. A MSG at a staff position may have only a few up to 15, depending on what level he is working, IE: Battalion, Brigade, Division section. In SF a MSG has 9 operators under him with a CPT and a Warrant on each team. So in reality there is no specific answer, it all depends on where he or she is working and at what level.

@Bain Bain in case you prefer yet another account of what occurred, from a diverse attitude, get the e book "in the employer of Heroes." It replaced into written by Mike Durant, the pilot who replaced into captured (whom MSGT Gary Gordon died attempting to guard)
