Ok so heres my story. My 8 year old maltese had 4 seizures today (2 in the morning and 2 consecutively later within the day) now, about 6 years ago she had her first seizure and ever since then she showed no more signs of epilpesy until now. She was taken to the vet and given a prescription of phenoarbital but she still had a few fits after takeing it. Now my question is how she ever goin to "get out of it" whenever she seizured she'd become extremly disorientated, walking in circles continously, bumping into things and unresponsive to my presense and she'd never recover fully enough until her next one and its the rinse, repeat, cycle process all over again. Im not sure what im going to do i dont know when the medication will take effect.

She may be reacting to the phenobarbital. In such a small dog,the dosage may need to be adjusted.I had a large mixed breed who took 400 mgs.a day and potassium bromide and Valium besides, and she never even acted tired. But a friend had a toy poodle with epilepsy and the phenobarbital made her drowsy and she would stumble and be disoriented all the time. It's worth a try to ask your vet if the medication could be causing the unresponsiveness, because my dog was completely normal between seizures.

It is not clear that how long your dog is on the treatment. So may be you should be a little patient and wait until the treatment shows its effects. Meanwhile you can talk to your vet and see if he/she could find the source of the epilepsy. Finding the source of the problem may help you and your vet may think of redosing the medicine after an examination.

Good luck

That really sucks. I'm so sorry. I had a dog who was prone to seizures too. It's heart-wrenching to watch them and not be able to do anything about it.

The question you have to ask yourself is if the quality of life she is living is worth the effects of the seizures. No one wants to put down an animal that is so clearly a part of your life. But as an important part of your life, and as the one responsible for HER qulaity of life, you need to compare the one with the other.

is it only in the sunlight? i have photosensitive epilepsy and that's how i get it.
just keep giving her the medication and eventually it will take effect. it may never go away, but it may reduce them
i wish her the best :)
