From your description, it does sound like the diagnosis is correct. Medication can be helpful, so I would certainly give it a try. Finding someone you can talk to honestly is also helpful; studies show that medication and therapy together are more effective than either individually.
In the end, you'll get better faster if you start trying to make changes, even if they're only slow and simple ones at first. Try and do at least one thing that's enjoyable or that you used to enjoy in the past. Don't withdraw into yourself; try and get out and do things and be with people. There's an old saying in the 12-step movement called "Fake It 'til You Make It." It means that you have to try and do the sort of things that normal people do even if you don't feel normal. Eventually you'll get better.
Try reading this book: "Feeling Good," by Dr. David Burns. It's a classic in the self-help field and it's based on some solid research.

Why don't you take the medication?
Medication would buoy your mood up enough so that you could deal with the problem.
Ok, but meanwhile, here's what I recommend. Get yourself a notebook... a pretty one.. one that you like. And get a pen that writes well... maybe one with ink in your favorite color.
Write.
And I mean write every day. Write what you are thinking. Write what went wrong that day and what went write.
Be painfully honest and daringly wishful...
Somewhere in that writing you will find that "unnamed" thing that is dragging you down. You might even find your muse and find that you enjoy writing.
According to Kaye Jamison, many artists and creative types are touched by the fires of depression...
To get you started on your writing, and to change the focus from what's wrong with your life, try listing 10 things that are right with life. For example, baby kittens... with their tiny pink paws... great, puffy storm clouds... the feel of the ocean on bare feet... think of things that are good and right in life...
and make yourself focus on those things.
Next, list the ten things you dislike most about school. Next write, next to each item, what you would do to change that situation if it were in your power to do so.
Feel free to email me, if you wish.

Your really depressed!!and you have no motivation b/c your depressed, and your depressed cuz your gaining weight... its a vicious cycle. But you have to do something about it!!! Its tough being 16 ..god I remember, but it gets better. I know taking medication sucks, the side effects suck..but it will help.even if you dont think it wil help, it will it just takes a few months to really kick in. There is hope for you!! you only have like what? 2 yrs of HS left?? You can do it. You gotta just suck it up sometimes.. thats life. Things will get better. Please talk to someone though, it will really help you. Good Luck and remember, life is beautiful. Be happy. why be miserable? It only makes your situation worse... Its better to make an effort and fail than to do nothing at all..

Have you tried speaking to a counsellor? Sometimes counselling can help a lot without medication being involved.
I used to feel as depressed as you all the time too, but I try to practice positive thinking and talk over my thoughts and feelings, and sometimes just write them down so I'm not thinking about them all the time. A sort of better out than in approach!
Good luck I hope you feel better soon.

sounds familiar, you got a ways to go before you hit rock bottom and then it's actually a relief. You sound like your almost there and i didn't have it till 29, i should imagine you'll be a prodigy by 25 with throngs of adoring fans.
It was actually in the simpsons movie which i really didn't see till tonight, (spoiler alert). when he had his vision, she told him he must have an epipheny. It was not until he had given up that he found his path. but you can't just choose, you have to wait, (the ride's not all bad), it will happen, in the face of despair you will see your hearts desire and then you will stop at nothing to have it. good luck, you can do anything you want to do but you must start choosing what you do do.

Girl, you need HELP!!!
What do your friends and family think?
Most importantly...What do you think? do you want to change or do you like things the way they are?
If so...
get of your butt and do somehting about it!
Voulenteer at the animal or homeless shelter. This will make you feel like you have a purpose.
Everyone has a place in this world!!!!
YOU were put here for a reason....only time will tell.
But you need to put in some more effort.
Good Luck!

hun we all experience i think to some extint where we just dont care, but the trick is to know that in your heart you truly do care. since you are feeling this way and have been diagnosed with depression, you need to talk to someone you trust and your dr. medicine is not something to be afraid or ashamed of. it would probally help you to feel more optimistic about your life. dont be so hard on yourself. millions of peole have depression, and it is not their fault. however it will grow to be if you dont take control of it. you are not alone, and i wish you happiness and strength

welcome to being 16. we've all been there sweetie. I promise. I was there just 6 years ago, exactly where you are. Exactly. Know what? I bet a lot of kids feel the same way, even if they don't talk about it. Even the popular kids, they just deal with it differently. So let me lend you some advice.
Change your lifestyle. It you just don't care, find something to care about. Find a passion and immerse yourself in it. like to dance? sign up for a community dance program. Enjoy singing? Join the choir. Find something you can put your focus in and do it! When you find something you are good at, your confidence will skyrocket and give you motivation.
Move! I don't mean pack boxes, etc. i mean take a half hour walk every day. Bring a friend or your ipod, it's up to you. Let it be your optimistic time. Take the time to think about things that may not be going great and how you can turn it to be positive. Meditate doesn't have to mean "Ommmm" but looking inside to find how to better yourself. Plus the exercise will get your blood flowing and make you feel good (and will be great for your body).
Write down your goals. Write down goals for the day, the week, the month, the year, and the next five years. Think about school, being overweight, getting a job, and your future. Where do you want to be, if it could be anywhere in the world? now don't just dwell on where your behind, write down how you can get to those goals! Step by step, day by day, what can you do to reach your goals?? Keep that posted and look at it daily. You have to have something to look forward to in order for getting of bed to look good.
Like i said, there is nothing wrong with you. This is going to sound harsh but i mean it with love... grow thicker skin and a backbone! Life isn't easy, and it never will be. TONS of people go through depression (myself included, without meds) and we make life worth living! I love life. I screw up all the time, but know what? Tomorrow is a new day. Let's say i eat really unhealthy one meal. It's okay!! The next meal i eat will be healthy!
only you can change your mood! no one else makes you feel depressed or sad. YOU are holding you back. Why? Why waste all that time wallowing in self pity? It's not worth it, trust me! I lost years that way, and a lot of friends!! No one can help you but YOU. All the meds and friends and therapy won't make you happy if you aren't willing to be happy.
people love you and only want the best for you. smile, even when people put you down or you get a bad day. It's okay. Not one human is perfect. Everyone has bad days, it's about how you deal. I have a bad day and i turn on an upbeat happy song and sing my heart out!
From one prior depressed 16 year old to you, it's your choice. If you ignore this and decide to just keep in your route, that's your decision and your free to make it. But wouldn't you like to start making life fun and worth while? It's up to you and only you. Good luck! I hope you make it through this tough time with a new sense of self independence and happiness!
for those who say to take meds, it's only up to you. They didn't work for me. Yes, they made me not depressed, but i wasn't anything. i couldn't feel pain, true.. but i also couldn't cry when i should be able to, couldn't laugh, i just was a body with nothing in it. I tried at least 5 different kinds before the doctors said "sometimes meds aren't for everyone, and that's okay!"
so try and change yourself BEFORE going on meds. It is a typical high school feeling, so before you go on meds, try and change yourself. It will be so much more fulfilling to truly feel things. Have a broken heart? you should cry! but when your truly happy, you'll know it's you whose happy, not the meds making you that way!
