What sites and searching systems will you use?

Start with the big search engines, I always use Google, and select a few general sites.
The national tourist office or organization if you can find it, or just one of the big commercial sites.

Also look on several travel sites for practical info, like Lonely planet: http://www.lonelyplanet.com/
or Rick Steves: http://www.ricksteves.com/
And check your passport and visa requirements:

I would also read the site of the Embassy or Consulate if I would go for a non touristy journey.
And start reading blogs, travel books and see picture sites.

And I would buy a Lonely Planet guide covering the area I want to travel.
Besides, I would walk into my nearest travel agency and get a few brochures for package travel, to see what they include.
