I have been battling depression since I was about 16 years old. Ever since it began, it has never really let up. Im now 21. I have learned how to disguise it well. The depression seems to be less invasive to my life than it has been in the past, but it haunts my thoughts. Every day, for about a year now, my mind drifts to horrible thoughts of not myself, but people I care about dying, usually in grusome ways. I cannot shake this... I have tried everything. What the hell is wrong with me? What can I do?

I started experiencing issues with depression when I was 16 also. I'm now 25 and still have problems with depression and anxiety/panic disorder. There are good days and bad days, and I can usually tell within a few hours of waking up how the day is going to be.

I take anti-depressants and anti-anxiety medication to treat my symptoms and it has changed my life. My treatment is from my primary doctor. I do not see a psychologist, although I have in the past. For me, the medication has allowed me to work through some of the thoughts and issues on my own through thought and personal reflection.

I would recommend starting to learn what things are your triggers. For most people, there are certain things that make those thoughts and feelings come up. Once you have identified them, it gets easier to work through it.

Talk to your doctor about what you are feeling. If you are not comfortable talking to the doctor you have, find another, and another until you are comfortable.

The thoughts you have seem to me to be more related to a 'generalized anxiety disorder' than depression. Most people with anxiety have unusual thoughts about horrible things like you described.

Regarding homeopathic medicine--- do not take anything without talking to your doctor first. There can be serious health concerns, and possible life threatening interactions with doctor prescribed medications.

Feel free to email me if you would like to talk more.

One thing that definately helps stress is good breathing. It works! For anxiety too. Breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth for a minute. When you do this, don't use your chest to breathe, use your stomach muscles. Breathe in through nose your stomach rises, out through mouth...push it out with your stomach muscles. This actually works very well. Have you watched the DVD The Secret? It is about the law of attraction and how you can change your negatives to positives and greatly change your outlook on life to positive which, it turn, helps your general unhappiness/grumpiness. Exercise can also help with both. So does visualization.
