I was thinking about becoming a personal grocery shopper for people who need it. I need to make some extra money on the side, and I thought maybe this was a good idea. What kind of percentage or fee do you think is fair to charge?

Depending exactly what you would do for them I would charge a set amount per trip. If you are in a high cost of living area maybe $40 or in a low cost of living area $20.
For that I would shop from their list in one store and bring it to them and put the food away if required, at least lift the heavy items if they need or want the help.
My aunt and uncle have had problems like cancer and strokes so pouring a 40 lb bag of dog food into a dispenser isn't something they can do so they wait until they have company to help. They can't lift the 12 packs of pop either so only do heavy shopping when they can get assistance.
If you wanted to offer more service like shopping all the sales at 2-3 stores to get them all the loss leaders or take them with you I would charge by the hour.
