Absolutely - and it's not just the way it's written. The phonetic nature of laughter can vary a lot. Europe is relatively uniform so Westerners don't appreciate it so much, but if you talk to Africans, Middle Easterners and Asians a lot, you'll hear some very distinct laugh forms. Persians, I've noticed, tend to snort, and a lot of sub-Saharan Africans seem to have a peculiar voiceless snicker (often with a hand gesture), which I don't think I can describe in any intelligible way. You really have to hear it. And I think someone mentioned the polite female Japanese laugh, which consists largely of putting the hand over the mouth and smiling coyly, occasionally with a high giggle if it's really funny.

Laughing is based on personal termperment and maybe the way the brain is wired rather than on language.

Think of all the people you've known in your life who spoke English yet laughed differently than you do.

The actual laughs sound the same, but different languages write out laughs differently. For example, in English, laughs are written like 'ha ha.' In Hebrew, it's 'cha cha.' The 'ch' is guttural as in the Scottish och, not as in church.
