Here, I'll break down the word for you.
Atheism breaks down into the prefix "a-" and the noun "theism".
a-, in this context, is defined as "lacking, absent, without".
theism is defined as "belief in the existence of a god or gods".
If you break "theism" down even further, you get:
theos, the Greek word for "deity, god".
ism, defined in this context as "belief, system of belief".
Therefore, put it together and you very simply get "without god belief".

An atheist does not have a deficient belief or a negative belief. An atheist is completely free of any belief that there is such thing as a god.
