To my knowledge, serving in a restaurant is the only profession that pays a lot less than minimum wage, and the IRS assumes the server is getting tipped, and taxes you on roughly 8%, whether you made it or not. I've said it before and I'll say it again; if you don't want to tip, don't. No answer on Y/A is going to make you change you ways. But don't expect people to give you the best service when you frequent a restaurant, I usually am not too keen waiting on someone who I know not to tip. Maybe you can take your distaste for tipping and turn it into something positive, like staying home and learning how to cook many different foods. That'd be cheaper than eating out, even if you didn't tip. You don't have to tip EVERYBODY, that's quite an exageration. I'm really sick of people bitching about tipping and how the system sucks, it's not like you're doing anything to change it.

Have you ever worked in food service? If not and I don't mean to be rude and I'm not a waitress but unless you work in an upscale restaurant you don't make that much of an 'hourly' wage the waitress minimum wage is a bit different than 'actual' minimum wage in a lot of places so they bust their butts for their tips and from what I see not many of them actually get a paycheck because of health insurance. If they were a bad server don't give them as much that says something, but honestly if you get good service they should get a good tip. I can see where you may tip a parking attendant (someone who parks your car for you) but I don't think you HAVE to. It also depends on where you live Miami,FL... New York, California in some spots yea cuz they're expensive places and those people are hired specifically to cater to YOU...any expensive place I would tip the bell hop the valle(spelling...I mean if the guy takes out your Ferrari on a joy ride while your gone like in Ferris Bueller I'd say hell no) because like I said they will take care of whatever it is you need...if they suck don't tip them that's my policy. If you really don't want to tip for good service don't go to a fancy restaurant lol. That's basically all I can tell ya.

There are whole countries - first world, where hospitality and service industries are well developed and pay a living wage - where tipping is quite the exception. The very fragmented tipping regime in the United States can be laid at the feet of a major disconnect between the owning class and the workers.

All people who work in the food service industry rely on their tips to make ends meet. I tip anyone who serves well and does a good job. People who work for tips, no matter what their job description is, don't make as much as a person working "regular" job. I'm not sure who else you feel you must tip but it's standard to tip beauticians (people who cut your hair), cab drivers and delivery people. I guess I would need more information. I don't feeling tipping "is getting out of control" at all. I'm a former cocktail waitress and a lot of people don't tip at all. It's hard to pay rent like that. I was a waitress when I was in college and there were many cheap people out there that made it difficult for me to make a decent wage. I'm guessing you never had to rely on making tips to pay your rent? If you don't feel you want to tip someone, don't use their services.

The wage for a table server is not the same as that of many other professions. Be a decent individual and remember that.
A gratuity, or tip, is also regularly given for better than expected service, as a sign of gratitude. GRATITUDE, what a concept, right?
Stop being cheap, and give where giving is appropriate. I agree, it isn't appropriate everywhere and for every example of service.
I hope you might try to empathize with someone who will see their day improve when you put down an extra five dollars after your meal.
Also, I am always grateful to work a job where that isn't a constant worry after I complete my work.
Good Luck and Goddess Bless.

I agree.
The other day some whack job was on here whining about nobody giving him tips when he delivers furniture. I guess that he gets paid to do that and people pay a delivery charge when they buy the furniture doesn't matter...he needs his tip.
I'm enough of a jerk to still tip based on quality of service. Yes, I realize that wait people get paid less than minimum wage and depend on the tips, but, that being said my theory is that if you cannot do your job and aren't making tips then perhaps you should seek another vocation. I do NOT feel compelled to reward bad service with a tip.

It's a consiquence of economical pressures in our economy. As the lower spectrums of service in our economy feel the financial pinch, they are going to demand tips and bigger tips for the same services no different than the APR increasing on your bank's credit card. We are not cut off from the world as we would like to think, everybody pays eventually.
