Top five reasons no one will listen to your comment.
5. People who come to R&S to ask questions don't want to ask questions -- they want to make statements (myself included)
4. "Cult" on R&S is illdefined
3. People who are thoughtful, humble, teachable, and who love their neighbors are generally also industrious and have NO time to waste on trivial persuits such as YA R&S
2. Everyone here has already made up their minds about the LDS church -- it's people, and LDS doctrine
1. I don't think you actually asked a question.

1. Read the Bible? No. The elders that come here tell me they haven't read the Bible in years.
2. What does the Apostle Paul say about muzzling the ox that treads out the corn?
3. The historic Christian church does this too.
4. Wrong again. I have seen Historical Christian churches excommunicate people.
5. I have been to the church too. So what?
A. They say that they are the only true church on the face of the earth.
B. They deny science and facts about the Bible not being translated properly
C. They hold to a pile of doctrines of God and salvation that are neither in the Bible nor the book of Mormon.
D. They lay claim to restoring the priesthood which is refuted by the book of Hebrews in the Bible.
E. They have a pile of events that they predicted that never came to pass. All it takes is one to be called a false prophet. They have so many more.
They are a cult and you don't have to doubt it.

Some will call a cult no matter what. I even had a born again tell me that it would be easier for a Christian to enter heaven after murdering his family than for a Mormon who has never comitted murder.
The Church does ask for 10% tithing, and once a year we declare to our bishop if we paid a full-tithe. If we have not paid a full tithe, we are challenged to improve the following year.
Tithing does NOT pay for our bishops. This money is used for the financial obligations of the Church: printing material (including Scriptures and lesson manuals), building and maintaining facilities (chapels, temples, tabernacles, parks, schools), etc. A portion of tithing is also spent on the poor and needy, though we have separate funds for that (humanitarian aid, and fast offerings). A small allowance is given to those in full-time employment of the Church (such as the Prophet and the Apostles). The Church is audited once a year by certified public accountants.

I have also been to the church, read the book of Mormon, and have friends who are Mormons. I know their beliefs as well as my own, and I must say, " they are the nicest of people, far more moral than a lot of Christians. However, there is one very large problem, they do not believe in the deity of Jesus. Even the Bible says, " Jesus is the only way to God, and no one can come to God, except through Jesus.
Good works and good morals, are not what gets you into the Kingdom of God, It is Jesus. You must be born again, when this happens you are changed from the inside, you do good works, and live a good moral life because you want to please God, not because you are trying to be excepted by God. Once you are born from the Spirit, you know you are excepted, you do not need a religion, or a church building, you are part of God's family, you are part of the Spiritual Church that Jesus established here on earth.
God be with you,

Dear JD,
Your arguments suggest that churches that pay ministers are corrupt. Even though the apostle Paul was paid in the Bible.
A cult is a religion that claims to be Christian but isn't. So Mormons claim to follow Jesus Christ- but yet deny his deity, wrote another testament of Jesus Christ - (The book of Mormon) and follow other Mormon books like the Pearl of Great Price and Doctrines and Covenants.
The definition of a cult is as follows: A religious organization founded upon the authority and teaching of one or more individuals whose authority is viewed as being equal ot or greater than the authority of Scriputre and whose teaching contradicts the theology of biblical and historic Christianity.
The founder of Mormonism is the prophet Joseph Smith. Deuteronomy 18:20-22 tells us how to respond to someone who claims to be a prophet to determine if he is a true or a false prophet.
Deuteronomy tells us to: examine his prophecies, if they fail to happen he is a false prophet.
Here are 5 prophecies of Smith's that are not true:
1) Smith prophesized that people live on the moon, dressed like quakers, live to be a thousand years and are six feet in height. Brigham Young also claimed that people lived on the sun!
2) Smith prophesized that the ten lost tribes of israel are living in the Tropical valey at the North Pole. The Apostle John is still alive and lives with them there.
3) Smith prophesied the Second Coming of Christ and the end of the world would take place in 1891.
4) Smith prophesied that a temple would be on the "temple lot" in Independence, Missouri within the generaiton of those living in 1832.
5) Smith prophesized that he would returm from Salem, Mass with "many people" and "much treasure".
These are only 5 of 64 false prophecies found in: Dcotrine and Covenants, The Pearl of Great Price, history of the Church, Journal of Discourss, and Mormon newspapers, magazines, etc.
Fact #1: Joseph Smith claimed to be a prophet.
Fact #2: His prophecies were false.
Concusion: Joseph Smith was a false prophet.
The prophecies of Mormonism are false and contradict the teachings of Jesus Christ- Mormonism is a cult!
Just speaking the truth! i have Mormon friends who are kind and wonderful people but the issue here is in regards to what a religion believes and that determines whether they are a cult or not.
Kindly,
Nickster

I agree with alot of those things about the Mormons.. but how about their tithing settlement? A Mormon must make sure they paid the proper amount by the end of the year even though they do not pass the plate during the service. And... you are not worthy to enter the Temple if you are not a full tithe payer.

>>4. Members can be excommunicated. No other church will throw you out as long as your wallet is open and full.<<
Boy, you got THAT right!! We don't accept any money from those who have been excommunicated. You'd think that if we were the money-grubbing group most anti-Mormons want you to think, that we would be not only accepting money from those who are ex'd, but EXPECTING them to be paying the church money.

I read the "Book of Mormon" also and The Pearl of Great Price. My Q to you would be Who do the Mormons say Jesus is.?
"No one comes to the Father accept by Me." who was speaking?
Now If you read the book of Mormon and you say They read the Bible, how do you justify what the Mormons say about Jesus? When you figure this out, RUN to the nearest Christian Church.

That is so right I wish everyone could see your point of view. It is so nice to see some on sticking up for our church instead of bringing it down. I agree with you 100%, but people will still say that we belong to a cult. They will because people are afraid of what they do not understand. I think a lot of that has to do with what we get to experience in the Temple, but it is the most amazing thing you will ever experience in your life. thank you for your thoughts.

I don't think mormons are a cult...but there is some definite BS.
I'd just say watch BIg Love on HBO.....definite bias on how the show portrays mormons..They show the good and bad sides....but they chose which is the good and which is the bad. I saw an interview/ documentary thing where the mormons on the "good side" still criticize the show.
I had a religious studies class and the prof said this..which i agree 100%...there is the "ideal" way a religion is practiced and the "real" way
Christianity never said 1 man 1 woman = marriage .....romans did.....but prostitution was ok with them.
I know there are other issues with mormans, but that seems to be the big one.....along with the underage marriages. I think that needs to be changed with the mormons.
Back in the day...marrying a 9 year old that hit puberty was ideal. High infant mortality rate....low life expectancy....just pop out as many children as you can before you die. Situation isn't the same anymore. I feel like the mormons cling onto that though.....i'm muslim myself and i know muslim countries cling onto that too...which i think is wrong.
Ok so i didn't hit anything you said directly in your question....but i did read them all...just my opinion
