My oldest son who just turned 18, wants to join the military..Problem is, he has bi polar and has a charge of criminal mischief on his record where he is on a diversion program through the courts.. would those 2 things right there disqualify him from joining?... I think he would be perfect for the military...When he is in a very structured and stricter enviorment, he does great and seems alot more happier and focused... Also what issues could disqualify a person from being able to join the military?

ok, to start the criminal mischief is not a problem (easy waiver for most branches) well like the posts before say, if he comes into the recruiting office and lets the recruiter know he would be disqualified from all branches because we all go through the same medical when qualifying for the military. but all that hinges on what you tell the recruiter and what the recruiter decides to hame him tell meps (militry entrance processing station). BUT first if somone where to tell me they are bi polar i would imediatly tell them they are disqualified and send them on their way. plus the military can be stressful and i personally wouldn't want to serve with someone that mught have some serious personality problems. but hey if he is completley over it and he doesn't tell the recruiter or if that recruiter decides to try to hide it then you would most likely get away with it cause meps only knows what you tell them. if he is on medication then it wont matter cause it will show up on the drug test. but don't have him lie to the recruiter if it is a serious problem. i know i would be pissed, cause i have had tons of kids lie to me and the tell meps and it makes me look like i tried to cover it up. i would just call your local recruiter and explain the whole situation to him and see what he says, if he has your sons interest in mind and not his "quota" then he will give you the best advice. good luck

No, I dont think that any service will accept him.

Consider for a moment what you are saying... yes, the military has a structured enviornment... but it also places an huge value on individual responsiblity and initiative.

Also, I think you have the wrong idea about military structure. The structure is there because we take on extraordinarly complex tasks and we need to all be part of the whole working toward one goal. Not the kind of structure you find in school where teachers tell you what to do, but the modern military is more of a structure that lets everyone know what their job is and so they can get at it hard and fast every day.

Lastly, the military is all about huge stress. Especially during wartime. Are you willing to bet your neighbors kids lives on the decisions your son might make? What if he is making life and death decisions at 2 am, outside in the rain, and after being up 36 hours? That is not an uncommon situation.

God Bless you for looking for a place that is a good fit for your son and can help him grow while still supporting him thru his difficulties. And I pray he finds success in life. But I really dont think the military is the best place for him.

A diagnosis of bi-polar will immediately disqualify him from enlisting. While the military is structured in many ways, it also requires a great deal of independence, self reliance and there are frequent, and often times short notice is given, changes. Deployment for your son would be a nightmare...long hours of work, little sleep, no privacy.

No, any sort of mental condition that has required him to take medication disqualifies him from joining the military.

Being Bi-polar very much so disqualifies him.

Im sorry

I just wanted to add that the military is really only structured during boot camp. The Marine Corps probably has the most structure after boot camp. In general all the military services expect you to act like a man. They really don't hold your hand. But they are there to punish you if you goof up.

It is too bad they have to exclude different people from the service. But they have to prepare for the worst case accident and combat scenarios.

Bi Polar is a permanent Disqualification with no waivers authorized for all five Branches.

He is out of luck.

It could make his problem worse because he is creative. Creative should be encouraged to: find, improve, improvise, plus the drugs. People need more than medication. There are over 100 types of entertainment. The military is full of all types of occupations and no economist. Too bad they would be Peace Keepers in Canada which is better than killing over money. I think it would be fun but I would rather walk high steel because I'm in control. School is also fun if it's not a pushing affair. Economist questions when pushing my head.
