I know this 14-year-old boy and he is mentally challenged (mild). I'm over his house and he pats me on the head like you would to a toddler or a dog and says hi.

His mother wasn't turned towards us and it wasn't until she turned around to notice what he did, and scolded him for patting my head. Should I have told him not to do it before she did or did I do the right thing by letting his mother tell him not to.

I don't really know them well, I only see them a couple times a year at those really big family events and stuff.

Do you give him your paw?

You were right to leave it to his mother.

Now that you know that she does not consider it acceptable for him to behave in this way, you can gently remind him not to do it if it happens again.

Unless a young person is in immediate physical danger unless warned, it is always best to follow the lead of the parent in matters of behaviour and discipline.

Cheers :-)

It sounds like you handled it well, but there's also nothing wrong with saying "Bobby, please don't touch my head. I don't like it."

I used to sub in a special ed classroom. Getting a pat on the head is nothing. It was a good day for me if I didn't get licked.

If it didn't bother you, then don't worry about it and tell the mom that you didn't mind.

If it did bother you, then thank the mother. She should be reprimanding him. If he does it again though you can tell him no.

Let the mother handle it.

I think it is kind of cute, him patting you on the head, he probably doesn't realise it may offend you, it may be his way of saying hello!!
