Trust me - get copies of your marriage license. You'll have to show it pretty much everywhere.
When I got married, I received a copy of a form to mail into the SS office with my marriage license to get my new card. It came in the mail about ten days later. In the meantime, I was still able to obtain a new DL (with my old DL and marriage license), new credit cards, etc. with my married name. MOST places will be pretty understanding - they've been through this about 1,000,000 times already, and a (notarized) copy of your marriage license will be sufficient.

This is what I figured out:
1. took marriage license from pastor (nothing else)
2. to the DMV first.- get new drivers license
3. THEN go to the social security office and get new SS card. (seems backward, but that's what SS office told me in PA, and i guess all states would be same. )
4. Go to the bank and open new accounts/ joint accounts. Make sure to put each other on savings *I recommend having a conversation w/ spouse about how this will go (joint/separate) before the wedding. I'm surprised how many couples do it very differently and have different ideas of what's right.*
5. change professional licensure if necessary for your job
6. Insurance policies
7. anything else you can think of
Good luck!

You'll need to produce your marriage certificate to pretty much change anything. You'll need your marriage license and the amendment form to change your SSN card. Judging by the looks of your name, you'll need your marriage license to go to DEERS for an ID card on post; the same with your drivers license. However, I'd do your military ID before you get your drivers license so you also have government proof of your married name.(still take the marriage license) You'll also want to note your bank that you'll be getting married. Good luck and congrats!

My wife just changed hers. Got marriage license and went to Social Security Office. They mail you a new one which takes weeks to get but print you a form stating name change which we immediately took to DMV. After that, you have to do all the leg work. City Clerk for new Passport, visit bank in person - they will issue new cards, call credit cards, voter registration, etc...

In Texas you have to change your driver's lisence first. Do do that you need a copy of your insurance and your marriage lisence. Then for the socail security office you need your marriage lisence and the new paper copy of the driver's lisence showing the new last name. The bank will need a copy of the marriage lisence when you change your name on the account or merge accounts with your husband.

To get your name changed on your drivers license all you need is your marriage certificate. Your social security card , which is what your employer will use to issue you your check..what ever name is on it...it will be issued under THAT name..same with a checking account. So...I would definetly get my social security card changed first.

Of course you use your marriage license! I started with Social Security, and all I had to bring in was my marriage license (plus maybe an existing driver's license to prove that I was who I said I was). That's pretty much all you need (in Florida, of course), and I really didn't have too much trouble doing it.

For social security, you just need your marriage certificate.
For DMV you need to show your new SS card.
