For some reason, I never really gave much thought to this. Hagler had trouble with slick boxers, as evidenced in his loss to Sugar Ray Leonard. Ray Robinson lost his first fight to an aggressive and tough swarmer in Lake LaMotta. SRR was slicker than SRL, and MH was more aggressive and tougher than JLM. And both fighters had good skills in the other aspects of boxing not mentioned. What do you think would be the difference maker in a 15 round bout?

***ADDITIONAL: JIMMY BRYGHT, you are aware that Ray Robinson (the subject of this Q) and Ray Leonard are 2 separate boxers?***

This would have been the classic matchup between two great and legendary fighters without a doubt. Both could punch hard with Hagler being more aggressive and Robinson having a little better handspeed and footwork. Both had great chins so I doubt there would be any knockouts or even knockdowns either. If there is a better matchup than this one, I really don't know what it is as they are so evenly matched with both men at their very best. This fight could easily be a draw and in a series of fights each could beat the other by the slimmest of margins. I think that Robinson outboxes the very tough Hagler winning the last few rounds and gaining a close and split decision in a great bout with a clamoring by the boxing public for a rematch of these two legends, Great question sir.

Marvin Hagler is one of the most underrated boxers of all-time. Because he was such a tough, rugged SOB many people fail to realize that he was actually a great BOXER (though not necessarily an fleet-footed one).

If there's any fighter who could take a punch on the same level of Jake Lamotta, it's Hagler, and offensively Hagler was a much more mechanically sound fighter with the same heavy hands. Add in the fact that Robinson was alot more "human" by the time he reached middleweight, and I'd take Hagler to outwork and upset Robinson in a 15-round decision.

(note: Robinson could win if he were to try the same, shameful strategy that SRL used when he won such a BOGUS decision, but the original Sugar Ray would have had too much class and heart to do that)

If I had to put my money on it I would go with Hagler at 160. Ray Robinson was in his prime at 147. The Leonard/Hagler fight was very controversial, it was a split decision, and several people still believe that Hagler won that. But anyways, I just don't think Ray Robinson would be slick enough for Hagler; Marvin would cut the ring off beautifully. Also Hagler could switch from southpaw to orthodox and IMO had more power and would land the harder punches.

I like Bluedevil's answer but I have to add Hagler was a better fighter than Leonard even though Hagler lost to him. Robinson had a harder punch than Ray Leonard and was a much faster puncher and faster on his feet. Robinson would have been too quick for Hagler. I have Robinson winning by decision against Hagler.

If Sugar Ray Leonard can decision Marvin Hagler then so can Sugar Ray Robinson...Hagler is not more aggressive and tougher than Jake LaMotta, but he is a better boxer. Ray Robinson by close unanimous decision.

Hagler was too strong and too busy for Sugar Ray Robinson at 160. I know SRR has many many fans out there but when you watch footage of him at 160 he seems very beatable. At 147 not as much. But at 160 Marvin Hagler had only one peer and that was Carlos Monzon.

I only saw Robinson in his later years, so I never saw him live in his prime or at welter. He was not as good at middle. I think he would have problems with Hagler, since Hagler was much stronger. I think that would be the difference over 15 rounds, Robinson would not be able to out maneuver Hagler and would eventually get beat down.

My answer would be this: this fight would probably be the greatest fight of all time. I feel even better than Gotti & Ward & would need more than just one bout.

Both were savage technicians, MH & SRR. I feel the first would be a draw. The second I feel SRR would win by TKO in about seven or eight rounds. MH had reaaly only one speed and was more aggressive than JLM, but SRR could knock you out from more angles than SRL could.

Just my opinion, great discussion and damn ... i'm getting real enthusiasic just thinking about this fantasy fight. Thanks for bringing this one to awnsers attention.

hagler was a very good fighter, but robinson is a level or 2 above. ray would rip hagler to peices with combinations to head and body. he would bust hagler face up the way hearns did. but sugar did not have a glass jaw like hearns so hagler would not be able to ko him. robinson late rd tko on cuts

Sugar Ray Robinson was far superior to Sugar Ray Leonard & as far as toughness was concerned, you could zap LaMotta with a stun gun & he'd look at you and say " what ? "-----so the answer is Sugar Ray Robinson by unanimous decision.
