I'm pagan and my roommate is not, but she is fairly open minded. I want to have an alter, usually I use the top of my dresser, but that isn't going to work this year. Any advice on how I can creatively make this work?

I do my practice when my roomie is out and I know she won't be back for a while. What I usually have in a couple rocks from special places for Earth, a chinese lantern for fire (no candles allowed) a few feathers for Air and a bowl and glass that I fill with water. Bowl has a fish painted in the bottom, the glass is clear with a water lily design in the glass. I just don't have a place where I can spread these out right now, so I'm trying to find something different to do. (And I know my spelling was... interesting when I asked this question)

I do not seek to control anyone or anything through magic. I do not even consider what I do as magic, per say. On the contrary, my workings are much like prayer in that I use it for introspection and self improvement. I use my altar as a place for meditation, as well. If you do not respect my spiritual choices, that is fine, but please at least respect my right to make that choice.

You may think this Is completely Innocent...But I can assure you It Isn't ! You are Inviting the powers of Hell Into your life and your room-mate's. Do you really know what you're opening yourself up to ??
satan will do anything to ensnare you and then he'll use you up and then you'll be tormented & mocked. It's not a game...Repent and ask Jesus to forgive you...Jesus Is coming..Please get ready...

Is all that stuff really necessary in order to fulfill your practices. I am a Messianic believer in Yeshua so prayer is more one on one. I believe you are being deceived but God must deal with you on that. As far as being more discrete how about just finding a quit place in the park or even the water features that you can bring inside can be more discrete.
What would look nice would be the fish tank with one of those Beta fish, perhaps on a marble or granite table, with maybe a dream catcher above it, and maybe a small lamp on the table. Only you would know what this represents.
I would have to admit it would make me feel very uncomfortable the way you are currently doing it, this would probably be less noticeable to me.

I had a small one sort of subtly done on my bedside table with "ritual tools" in the drawers - now I have several small altars throughout my house - most where the kids won't get to them - one is right behind this computer screen on a small wooden shelf sitting atop the desk - photos, stones, herbs and a candle along with water from Glastonbury Tor and a statue of Cerridwen reside there :) Most don't know who the statue of Cerridwen is, they just think she looks cool there LOL The stones and such also just look cool around the base of the candle - I'm not Wiccan so have never gone for the traditional "altar" per se. I just do what feels right to me.
Might also keep a little pouch of stones for grounding and focus in your purse or carry it around in your pocket or something - I'd suggest black tourmaline to ward negativity and malachite which will break if you're ever in any sort of danger spiritually speaking (and it will, I've seen it work!), rose quartz to keep your heart centered, clear quartz to keep you focused as well - perhaps a few others that you may feel more connected to ie: tiger's eye or garnet? Anyway pop them in a pouch and carry them with you or wear them in a medicine bag around your neck - voila.....instant altar-to-go!
Another option would be to get a box or something at a craft store and decorate it as you feel drawn to, then put all of your ritual things inside and altar things inside - can even be a trunk where the top drawer bit can be the altar itself and the bottom can be storage - anyway, if you're creative, you can make just about anything work!
Blessed Be!

yes, get saved and you want need an alter, Jesus died on a cross for you. Why are you mocking him this way. Calling yourself a pagan is a dangerous thing. There is a verse in the bible in the book of Galatians 6: verse7 that says be not decieved, God is not mocked, for what soever a man soweth that shall he also reap. When you commit blasphemy, you bring down the devil on you. You need to be saved, Jesus died on a cross for your sins and mine. Jesus loves YOU, he gave his life for you, how many other people you know have died just for you. Any, probably not. Accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour today, right now, if you believe that Jesus died for you on a cross, and if you are willing to admit that you are a sinner God can save you right now, Just say this Prayer, Dear Jesus, I believe you are the son of God, I believe you came to earth to die on a cross for me to be a perfect sacrifice for my sins and rose from the grave the third day, I know and confess that I am a sinner in need of your salvation. I ask you to come into my heart now and save me, in Jesus name I Pray, Amen... If you just Prayed that Pray with a sincere heart you are now saved and Jesus lives inside your heart. Find a church, get you a Bible and start reading. Its a wonderfull world being a born again Christian. If you have questions please feel free to send me an email. Good luck to you and God Bless YOU!!

So you're a pagan practicing witchcraft. Witchcraft uses magic to control the behaviour of nature &/or people. And the effectiveness of magic is dependent upon the use of demonic power. Behind your altar will be a demon. No-wonder your room mate will object - I would want you out..

it's altar, not alter...
you could do almost anything to make it seem unnoticeable...
I have a question though - how are you going to do your daily practice with her there? Or even the seasonal ones? Do you plan on having her there during any rituals you may undertake?
If you plan on being alone and not interrupted, this can be difficult...
As well as, if you place any objects that have any noticeable implications, she may start annoying you with q's...
practical advice:
simple black handed, single or double-edged dagger, with inscriptions placed with ink, after dedication of the tool removed,
2 plain-looking white candles
sea-shell for symbol of water
small figure of a bird, a feather, or whatever you connect with air or photographs of beach-water, mountains-earth etc.
a stone for symbol of earth
and, think of other ideas yourself...

My sacred space is a small bedside table with a lace runner on it. I have objects sitting on it which are meaningful to me but that simply look like decorations. I have a carved wooden statue of the Blessed Virgin from Africa, my Rosary, a small church-shaped bell, the beaded pouch containing my chanunpa ("peace pipe") with tobacco and sage, a little statue of Anubis, and a figure of a Native American with a wolf headdress.
They all represent something important to me concerning my spirituality, and I pray while sitting on the edge of the bed beside my altar. But they just look like a collection of figures to anyone else, and no one would particularly notice me praying there, either.
Perhaps you can do something similar for your room and just tell your roommate that these are objects that you enjoy looking at.

Try getting one of those plastic containers that slides under your bed and set your alter up in that. You can pull it out when you need to and slide it back under when you're done. This will pretty much keep all of your ritual tools out of site. Alternatively, if you feel like the sides of the container get in the way, you could use a flat piece of plastic or another material which will slide easily on your floor and just move something in front of it to hide your tools.

I find that if you make the items on your altar a little less witchy looking that most people don't even know they are looking at an altar. Try to use things like stuffed animals and such and maybe she won't even see it as an altar. Try it!
