patriot4913: This was a kinda smart-*** question in response to yet another slanderous one towards atheists.

Are you new here, hon?

I'm amazed I'd have to explain this to the readers, but here goes.

1. Christians falsely say that atheists are sad, hopeless people.
2. Christians falsely say that America is a Christian Nation (whatever that even means)
3. America has an unusually large Christian population.
4. America has an unusually high rate of depression.
5. If the false things Christians said were true, one would expect a low rate of depression, but this is not the case in the real world.

I suspect the high rate of depression is at least partly due to difficulty in obtaining mental health care.

Well, the depression that is rampant in this country could have MANY variables to associate with it. I am not sure how you would have conclusive scientific data stating that the USA is the highest given that much of the world doesn't exactly "measure" depression rates. If that were the case I would imagine depression would be higher in areas where people were consistently dying from starvation, dirty water, AIDS, etc. It is also important to note that MOST of the world, civilized or not, believes in a religion of sorts.

Personally, I believe that much of the depression caused in this country is the result of our "de-tachment" parenting practices leading to poor relationships throughout life.

Well, most of the 80% only profess to be Christians. It is mostly lip-service, for show, or because it is popular. Otherwise, they would know they have hope and that there is nothing to fear.

My guess is that some atheists do feel despair because they have nothing to for which to hope. However, I am also sure there are some atheists out there who feel totally responsible for their destiny and who do whatever they can to bring things to be. So we cannot lump all atheists in one group, or all Christians for that matter.

Most people are depressed due to the weather, it has nothing to do with being a Christian, or political views...

In areas that have rain that seem to last days on end the depression rate is very high do to in activity....

The best treatment is to get out and do something like go to the Mall, work on a hobby, Visit with your friends just do anything stare out the window looking at the Gray sky...

Your question sort of confuses me, but I think I know what you're getting at.

Anyways, I do hate the assumption that atheists are depressed and have nothing to live for if they don't believe in the afterlife. Well, I'm an atheist, and I'm one of the most outgoing and cheerful people you'll ever know. People say that if we have nothing to live for (like Heaven) then we'll go suicidal. I don't think so at all. When I think of that it gives me more passion to live life to its fullest. I live this reality to its fullest--with no depression. Whereas a religious person lives their only known life according to what their god(s) want them to do. Therefore, atheists truly do live life to the fullest, and depression has no place in that.

80% Christian? with all the sin and hate in America I find it very unlikely that 80% of Americans are really Christians. Just because a person believes in God, does not make them a Christian.

Americans are trained to become individualistic to carry their own weight, work and support themselves at age 18 and leave parents home to live with young opposite sex to have fun life of sex etc.. They go through many mates until they settle down. By then they become habitual of having sex with different people. It makes it hard for them remain loyal to one wife or husband and end up having divorces many times in their lives. The experiences of breaking up relationships wear them out. They are too selfish, give too much emphasize on their own happiness and disregard the lives of their children who suffer in broken homes. Their vicious cycle never ends. They divorce or abondon children and don't look back. By the time they realize they have done too many mistakes in life, it is too late to fix the past and turn into very unhappy people .

They never help their parents in their old age. When they are old their children do the same with them and they live lonely and depressed life.

Off courses there are good people also who spend all their lives with one mate, educate their children and have decent life.

It is also amazing to see that some of them in young age are extremely brave and give their lives saving other human beings like those who save passengers of a drowning ship, firefighters, soldiers and even common people helping others in chaos. Best example is of those who helped others on 9/11 incident in New York. Equals to some of these will be very hard to find in rest of the world.

Unfortunately majority of single senior citizens have very miserbale life in senior houses, nursing homes and ultimately in Hospice homes waiting to die. It is very very sad and depressing end with no family member to care for them.

Nope, because more like 70% of America use the title Christian but do nothing Christ-like (Christian). So, it's not the Christians being depressed, it's the ones using the title

People are over worked here and in a lot of cases still can't make ends meet . America is on the way out, it's destroying itself from the inside out.
