It varies flight by flight of course, and if you get a connection that changes things considerably (and is pretty much not answerable, because the times with connections vary all over the place).
Nonstops from LA to DC take about 5 hours, but the clock time that occurs is about 8 hours.
From DC to LA is about 5.5 hours, and the clock time is only 2 hours.
With Connections, LA to DC can take up to 10 hours, and DC to LA up to 10.5 hours. Adjust clock time for the 3 hours time zone difference accordingly.
Addition, this may not be clear. The first number (flight time) is the actual duration of the flight. Clock time is the difference in the time when you leave and the time when you arrive, and factors in the time zone changes.

Driving 12 hours a day, it took us 5 days to cross from Monterey to Baltimore. Monterey is about 8 hours from LA.
Actual flying time runs about 5-6 hours for a non stop flight. factor in the time zone difference is another 3 hours. expect another 4-6 hours for each connection.
