Fred Lorenzen, Jr Johnson in my early Nascar yrs..Then Richard Petty....Later when I really totally got into the sport Dale Sr....If I had to narrow it down to one driver it would be Dale Sr 100%...(RIP) there will never be another one like you..That driving style was beyond anything I have ever seen, and I was lucky enough to have known him...

Pre-modern: David Pearson
Modern: Mark Martin

In a recent Busch race, Mark Martin was about to get a top-5 finish when he ran out of gas on the last lap. (Ended up 14th, I think.) A week or two later, he was asked what happened. Mark said that on the last pit stop, his tire changers were SO fast, they got the tires on before all the gas was in, so he ended up pulling away when still a gallon short.

I had to think about that for a second . . .

Some young drivers would have said, My pit crew screwed up, and sent me out without a full tank.

More mature drivers would have said, We made a mistake in the pits, and I ended up leaving before my tank was full.

Only Mark Martin would turn the whole incident into a compliment! (Those tire changers! Aren't they something!) He is the classiest driver on the track today, bar none, and NASCAR just won't be the same when he retires completely.

Having followed NASCAR for over 40 years there are so many drivers that it is not easy to pick but these 5 come to mind first
Ned Jarrett (won first race I saw)
Richard Petty ( First Autograph I got)
Curtis Turner (showed NASCAR it's flaws in the 60's)
Darrell Waltrip ( Said what he thought)
Tony Stewart ( Has same mentality as Turner and Waltrip)

OMG that is so hard to answer
1) Jeff Gordon - been a huge fan since like 93ish
2) Richard Petty - 'cause he's the King
3) Benny Parsons - God I miss that man
4) Darryl Waltrip - just because he's him
5) Tony Stewart - 'cause he's not afraid to go after what he wants
6) Mark Martin - he's such an inspirational guy
There are so many good drivers out there it is really hard to narrow down the list, because I could keep going because there is generally something about each driver that I really like - they are the best of the best!

Seems a few people have to joke or troll these questions.

Hard question. Pre-Modern era, I would have to say the King, Richard Petty. 50 to 60 races a year and no safety equipment was a rough era. He fought some great races. Modern/not active would be Dale Earnhardt. He was the Intimidator, while still the voice of Nascar.

Active, many would say Jeff Gordon, but I would have to argue Tony Stewart. Why Tony? Jeff is a great driver, but does he try to race every chance he gets? Tony owns and races at his own track, and I believe co-owns a second. He loves racing, and is willing to say what is on his mind.

Have to add one extra. Tim flock and Jocko Flocko. Tell me another driver willing to have a pet as his co-pilot?

Well i've been a Nascar Fan now for about 10yrs and i've only cheered for one driver and still cheer only for that driver!

JEFF BURTON!!!!!

He is a great driver, respects everyone on and off the track, never wrecks anyone for his advantage, and won't wreck any other driver for a win! He is a great driver who races clean!

King Richard Petty. He set the standard for all drivers. All those wins and accomplishments, and it was almost always with a smile on his face. He would go out of his way to make time for the race fans and sign autographs until everybody got one.

Bill Elliot because he was humble throughout his career, even after he became rich, and he was faster than anyone before the Nascar rulebook got bigger than a telephone book. And if he won a race by luck or fuel mileage he was quick to acknowledge that.

Carl Edwards of course he's so humble, he loves his mother very much and he respects his fellow drivers and he has the greatest smile, he's also putting the petal to the metal , he's finally driving all out, he's just so calm about everything, great attitude, and the best looking from behind, and besides not liking him would be BAD

Richard Petty hands down. Humble, always smiling, always had time for his fans. Never forgot where he came from.
Secondly, Bobby Isaac. Fierce competitor, quiet, did not like the media and just wanted to race and be left alone.
